I dont know if its my music tastes changing, but this scene seems to have slowed big time within the last year. There's not much hype and a lot of the releases are mediocre causing them to fade quickly. There are a select few bands I can still listen to but overall I don't see myself listening to much new material in this scene. sampler was kind of a dud as well to be honest. The spring and summer samplers they used to pump out here were SICK. it just seems as a whole that reggae/rock is "bleh" now.

this forum especially used to be the place to be. now its a ghost town. i wonder if people still have some animosity from when the site went down for months on months on months for a "sleeker" design. i liked the old forum and site better personally. but thats just my opinion. it would be nice though to have people from the pier on here to talk to and ask questions like in the old days instead of "the pier staff"

my sentiments exacxtly. shit, i don't know if i have any reggae/rock in my six disc changer. nothing has excited me in the scene as of late, as of late i mean the past year or so. i am eagerly awaiting seth davis and shit from the year. i've got "bleach" and "in utero", and a guttermouth album in my player. it's nice to get back to your "roots", know what i mean. you're right about the spring and summer sampler being fire, hell, even the pnw sampler was pretty good. as for the older forum, man, i miss it. so much chatter. i especially liked when some of us were talking shit about the suckservillains, lol. it was also cool to have scurby around, loved the randomness.

There have been a lot of releases over the summer. A lot of skeptics were unsure about the Sublime w/ Rome debut album, and that took a lot of out of people. But there were plenty of huge releases over the summer: Ballyhoo! just dropped Daydreams. Tribal Seeds gave fans a taste of their next album. Through the Roots released their first full length album. That's just to name three bands. And all of them are pretty early in their lifetime as a band, even Ballyhoo!, who is embarking on a new journey with LAW Records.

Definitely wouldn't say the reggae scene is slowing down. There is a lot happening with the music.

I agree with the sentiment that this music is losing much of it's appeal for me personally. It could just be my tastes changing but I find that I'm rarely in the mood any more. Some things are exceptions as they transcend this scene, bands like Ballyhoo! and Passafire, but there have been a bunch of releases this year I just have no interest in. I'm kind of feeling the same way about other genre's as well, with every "indie" rock band using the same filtered vocals.

yeah i agree. The ballyhoo release didnt do much for me. I don't know why it just didn't hit with me like Do it for the money and cheers did. Lately I've be listening to more and more hiphop. I really dug the new blue scholars release this year. Also, the cat Blu is really sick. I've been stuck on the roots again for the past few weeks. Got my old roots cd's out from the shelf haha. Do you want more is a JAM of an album.

Don't worry. Slightly Stoopid is prepared to drop music. So is Outlaw Nation. As well as the highly anticipated third release from Rebelution. Silverback crew is keeping it straight. Stay tuned!

i threw up a little bit when i heard Yours Truly. The ballyhoo album seemed like a lot of filler to me, and im a big ballyhoo fan. Passafire's new album should be dope though!

Maybe the reason the board is slowing down a little is there hasn't been a truly great album released recently which the 'scene' has gone ape for. That or every post turns into how much everyone hates SWR...

It seems to me that there's a big shift going on today in music in general, not just the reggae rock scene.

It's my opinion that the next big shift is in the evolution of songwriting.

We've been dazzled by the flash of electronics and studio wizardry. Freedom to record and publish yourself has unchained so many people, which is beautiful.

although, the unfortunate side effect is that there's a general noise floor of millions of mediocre songs.

The formula is pretty simple, the best gear, engineers, the most money will not make a shitty song classic

Subpar gear, knowledgeable engineers and scrapping by at the bottom of the barrel can't stop a truly great song.

Just listen to the gritty ass roots reggae im assuming almost everyone on this board loves. Half the reason I love that shit is cause of the grit.

And with the internet, we have a system in place to easily publish and spread music.

With amazing songs, you don't have to ask people to share, they will because there is good feeling associated with showing your friends something you think is out of this world.

So what does this mean for bands?

Well, does your song jump out of the speakers and grab a hold of someone's heart. Does the emotion of your song fuse with the memories and emotions of the listeners?

Be truthful with yourself. If the answer is no, then go back to the drawing board.

Keep writing, and fearlessly.

You have to pour what is in your soul onto the sonic canvas. The reason we connect with great artists is because they can put into the words the feelings we all experience but don't know how to express.

That is the magic of music.

As long as capturing that is the goal, then we will see a modern musical renaissance

I am definitely on board with LAW and totally agree with you "CaliBreeze". Sure, some bands that many of you like are not really producing stuff that one wishes they would. However, have you guys heard the new Passafire yet? Wow!!!! Same goes for Ballyhoo! Those guys should be nominated for a grammy! The Natural Vibrations aka "Natty Vibes" just released their new LP titled "Got This Music" and let me tell you, Im glad I do! I hope those of you that are turned off by the scene give those albums a listen and hopefully those albums will provide you with some sort of comfort to where the scene is headed. Rebelution, Slightly Stoopid and Pepper tend to be favorites among most in the scene and they all mentioned that we should not be waiting any longer than early 2012 for their next releases. Thus, Im very happy with where the scene is headed and dont see it slowing down anytime soon. Much love! -Chadamercy_

I always liked the older style boards (with running threads), which always seem to have great traffic and discussion. Lots of silly stuff (Doing hardwood floors in temecula) , less organized, but good music info and discussion too.

Unfortunately, all those seemed to get infested by spam, even with login requirements. Is it impossible to run a board like that?

Yea the security for those boards are terrible and requires more maintenance then what its worth...By the way, Doing Hardwood Floors in Temecula, i still cant live that down haha Thats when i use to post as Miike on the old Stoopid/Archive boards haha. Holy cow Wiley!

The traffic to the forums went down when FB got popular and Myspace went away. We're revamping it now and will have more contests, polls, giveaways & getting the groups involved to make this the community for the scene.

But we never utilized the older style of forum here at ThePier. we got experimental when we relaunched the new site to try out a new forum but hated it and brought this one back.

Its up to you guys to keep it going! We'll do some cool fun stuff to partake in with giveaways and what not! I hope it catches on!
