The Late Ones “Thunder & Sun” Background:

The Pier first discovered The Late Ones in February 2015 when we were invited out to Hawai’i by EKM Records for a private listening party. We were introduced to some of the up and coming artists they work with and among the groups that we first met that night were The Late Ones who made an immediate impression. As individuals, they were high energy, all positive and very embracing to everyone around them. They were the first to greet us as we entered the venue and continued to hang out with us the rest of the evening, before and after their set.

Since then, the group has released their Debut EP, Revelate, in May of 2015 followed by 2 brand new singles “Thrive” and “Thunder & Sun” that dropped more than a year later on this past June 10th, 2016.

“Thunder & Sun” stuck out in particular as we at The Pier very much welcome the Reggae & Hip Hop crossover that very few in the industry are doing as well as The Late Ones, despite the smaller platform they’re currently on as a relatively new group.

Discussing the song, vocalist Tau Avei shared that “Thunder & Sun” is a tribute, explaining the power of Jah, reminding folks who their creator is. They produced the track with Noah Cronin as Tau shares:

“We laid the scratch track to this song one random night at our house in Laie, HI. We were going to New York the next day so we were just vibin’ out with the homies, mixing kava. My brother laid this piano line he made up in like 7th grade and we put a skank to it. From there, I just laid the lyrics I had which were inspired from our readings from the Bible. Later, we laid the real thing at Noah Cronin’s and made it a bit funky which was dope.”

The group shared that their plan is to set forth a formula of doing right, being right and acting right to solidify their longevity in the scene delivering a message for the people with their music.

Promoting 2 new singles, they group concluded that: We’re back at home recording as much as possible at Sea Major Seven Studios in Kalihi and in Hauula at my friend’s Ranson Almonte. We’re trying this new kind of Roots/Trap sound — We may drop a mix-tape this summer, if not some more singles to keep the people informed. Full length album in the works as we speak!”

The Late Ones

The Late Ones Background:

Based out of Laie, Hawaii, brothers Tui Avei (Lead vocals), and Tau Avei (Vocals), along with cousin Josh Brunson (Vocals) are the voices. Built on a roots reggae foundation with influences from various genres like Hip-hop, R&B, and jazz, The Late Ones’ unique blend of style, and harmony shapes a youthful, yet old school reggae vibe.

Born in Gardena, CA, The Late Ones harness something undeniably special. Rooted in Samoan culture, and complimented by the group’s African American heritage, the familial bond between the three members transcends throughout the group’s conscious lyrics and catchy melodies.

The name “The Late Ones” pays tribute to all of the late and great revolutionaries who have come and gone like Bob Marley, Tupac, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Biko, and John Lennon, just to name a few. It is the fusion of each revolutionary story, struggle, and message that inspires and resonates with The Late Ones’ own story, struggle, and love for all genres of music.
