Long Beach Dub All Stars have put their unique spin on the classic track “Pepper.”
Originally released by Butthole Surfers in 1996, the song remains a timeless remnant of ‘90s alt-rock. The track famously features lyrics which chronicle the lives of various characters, noting various pieces of information like their romances and brushes with death. The chorus still echoes in the ears of many rock fans today:
“I don’t mind the sun sometimes, the images it shows / I can taste you on my lips, and smell you in my clothes / Cinnamon and sugary and softly spoken lies / You never know just how to look through other people’s eyes”
Long Beach Dub All Stars don’t abandon the original’s alt-rock roots, but instead find a way to infuse their distinctive reggae sound into the tune. Brass, vocal harmonies, and acoustic guitar that gives way to an electrified solo, all add rich new elements to the track.

The cover is the latest sample from the upcoming compilation album, Operation Irie. The project features a wide array of reggae rock acts reimagining classic ‘90s hits, including Pepper, Passafire and Little Stranger.
In a message announcing the project, Pepper said Operation Irie was “formed in the image of the Punk-O-Rama, Fat and Warped compilations that came before” and added that the new album “pays homage to the ground breaking punk scene of the 90s & 2000s while showcasing a thriving reggae rock scene.”
