Sublime’s 2018 Record Store Day Black Friday Release

On November 23rd, Record Store Day will be participating in the Black Friday shenanigans with some exclusive offers that you can only pick up at your local (participating) record store. I personally view Record Store Day as Sublime Christmas because of the new, limited edition goodies they release for the fans each and every year.

Over the last 3-4 years, Sublime has released almost their entire catalog of music onto Vinyl. For Black Friday, they’re going with their Greatest Hits record to be put onto vinyl for the first time ever. Limited to a quantity of 5,000, the yellow colored vinyl will come with a bonus picture 7″ Flexi disc with the single of “All You Need (Live at the Palace)”.

When Sublime puts out Vinyl, they do it in style with amazing artwork and graphics. Such is the case with their Greatest Hits vinyl packaging as it’s made to look like a book of matches. It includes a group photo of the band with Lou Dog front and center on the cover. At the bottom there’s a disclaimer that reads “close cover before striking – keep away from children.” The gate-fold opens upward and reveals a sleeve of artwork that shows a line of matches with a rolled joint to the left. The top of the opened gate-fold has the hand-written lyric of “Lovin’ Is What I Got” along with a phone-number below it that is smudged by water drops.

Very cool addition to the Sublime collection, especially if you’re collecting their vinyl. I’m sure these will eventually leak and be made available online, but the point of Record Store Day is to go to a physical Record Store to make the purchase. Who knows, you may even find some other goodies in-store you didn’t expect to see.

Other Sublime updates include a documentary that is currently being put together as we’ve seen on social media with Miguel Happoldt digitizing never-before-seen footage of Sublime. The film is being made with the support of bassist Eric Wilson, drummer Bud Gaugh and the late Brad Nowell’s family and will be directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Guttentag. We’ll have more for you on that as news develops.

Additionally, 2018 marks the 30th anniversary for Sublime. One of the ways in which they’ve celebrated was back on September 29th, in partnership with Secret Walls in Los Angeles, CA, Sublime hosted a Live Art Battle with two curated teams of three artists, armed solely with black markers or acrylic paint. The two teams went head-to-head to come up with the sickest freestyle Sublime-themed art in just 90 minutes. On the turntables was DJ Product 1969 from Robbin’ The Hood, with Opie Ortiz as a judge.

And if you find yourself in Long Beach, CA, head over to Gaslamp Music downtown to check out a new Sublime mural that now lives on their wall! Stay tuned for more news and updates on one of the planets best bands.
