The Eddie Aikau Invitational, often referred to as ‘The Eddie,’ is celebrated for its rigorous standards, being held only when wave faces reach a minimum of 40 feet. This year’s competition marked just the 11th occurrence since its inception in 1984. Named for, Eddie Aikau, a legendary Hawaiian lifeguard, surfer, and cultural icon whose bravery and selflessness earned him a revered place in Hawaii’s history. His legacy extends beyond surfing; he saved countless lives as the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay and sadly, he gave his life attempting to rescue his fellow crew members in 1978. The Eddie Aikau Foundation, established in his honor, continues to preserve his legacy by promoting Hawaiian culture, ocean safety, and environmental stewardship.

In the aftermath of his victory, McNamara expressed profound gratitude, stating,

“This is a childhood dream of mine, something I worked on from when I was a little kid on the beach here, watching these events go down. Grateful to Eddie”

Beyond his surfing accolades, McNamara has made significant strides in the music industry. His debut album, A Dollar Short & a Minute Late, soared to No. 1 on iTunes’ reggae chart, showcasing his ability to channel the rhythms of the ocean into his music.
