Soulfiya “Family Business” Background:

February 17th 2017 will see the release of Soulfiya’s self-proclaimed greatest album to date with the release of ONE. This release is said to be a truly diverse work of art that was produced by Minneapolis’ The MindSettaZ with guest features that include artists from Mexico with Sgt. Remo & Ras Levy, as well as Mr. Blacc Sheep of Trinidad, M’Press 1Love of Liberia, and Nego Hights of Belize. In a time that is full of hate and division, this project seeks to bridge the gaps and show the inherent unity present in mankind that many of us all too often lose sight of.

New song, “Family Business” is our featured Leak of the Week as Soulfiya tells The Pier: “Its a hard road for artists to juggle aggressive road schedules and long recording sessions all while maintaining a family and raising youth. That’s what ‘Family Business’ is all about. Coming home to the family and keeping that love burning at home.”

Fellow artist, Skillinjah, had this to say with regards to Soulfiya:
“Soulfiya has a sick, versatile, rockstone deejay voice, with touches of a Sizzla and Buju Banton influence. Our American reggae scene is full of singers, artist like Soulfiya are trying to broaden the reggae genre in America by adding a more foundation of deejay elements — Toasting, rapping, chanting. I can relate to his struggles doing this. My homie is talented!”

The album, One, will be out February 17th via E5 Wreckords — Follow them on Facebook by clicking HERE!

Soulfiya

Soulfiya Background:

Soulfiya is an influential veteran of the American reggae scene who’s accomplishments include being featured on a Billboard Reggae Top 10 and gracing the iTunes reggae Top 50 with his debut solo release REALITY. Fiya’s music blends Reggae, Dancehall, Dub and Hip-Hop to create a raucous, high energy show that is said to keep their crowds excited. To date, he has performed in 39 states and 4 nations and continues to tour as a solo act.

Coming from a mixed family, with a Caribbean (Haitian/Guyanese) Father, Soulfiya was never too far from the ebb and flow of reggae music. He began his career well over a decade ago in Riverside California as DJ(mc) for The Gideon Band, a cover band playing reggae, dancehall, and soca. After quickly developing his own style of rough ragga toasting, Fiya made an impromptu move to the Texas coast. A relative “Jack of All Trades,” Fiya emceed and played keys for various bands, hosted, Dj’ed, and ran many local reggae nights, all while booking national and international headliners to play events in town.

Through tireless Texas touring and the release of several successful reggae/hip-hop mixtapes it became obvious that it was time for Soulfiya to “go solo”. He formed a backing band The Black Lung Crew, made up of a hybrid of veteran and up and coming young reggae musicians. The next 2 years would see Soulfiya & The BLC catapulted to a higher degree of success, playing several large regional festivals and releasing 2 more mixtapes.

In 2014 he released his debut solo effort Reality that was recorded with world renowned modern dub producer McPullish and featured contributions from Haitian reggae pioneer Bigga Haitian and Puerto Rico’s Gaby Veray. In 2015 Soulfiya partnered with Youthman, Kansas City reggae producer and member of the Ganjah Records family (formerly of 77 Jefferson), to create “Inna fine Style.” This feature packed EP rekindled the reggae/hip-hop crossover craze of the 90’s, with a crucial blend of sweet horns, vintage licks, thick digital bass to give each track a distict old-school meets new-school feel. A litany of midwest reggae staples appear (Skillinjah, Joel Castillo of 77 Jefferson, Nowlege) as well as international dancehall singjay Bobby Hustle and Texas rap icons E.I. and Witch Dokta.
