Mystic Roots “Marie” Background:

I first discovered Mystic Roots when I was a youngster, illegally downloading music from Napster — Yes, Napster kids! Back in Napster’s hay-day was when I came across the song “DJ Inna Dance” and immediately loved what I would later discover in the first album with the 1998 release of Constant Struggle.

The band has come a long way since then and with the release of their new album Change, that was mixed by E.N Young at Imperial Sound Recording Studio and subsequently released via his label at Roots Musician Records. The album includes 15 total tracks of dancehall, hip-hop, rock and pop under an influential umbrella of reggae.

The albums leading single, “Marie,” has been making the media rounds as a fan favorite from the new record and we’re no exception as we’re excited to feature the song as our Leak of the Week!

The Romain Virgo inspired track is an ode to the loving relationship between Marijuana and fans as vocalist Coot Dog tells The Pier: “Romain Virgo had a freestyle on a mix-tape where he was singing about being in love with ‘Marie.’ We loved it so much, we thought it would be cool to write the ‘answer’ track to that freestyle. Katherine taking the role of Marie singing back to the smoker. My verse was basically saying I’m taking Romain’s girl, snagging the joint so to speak. We’re hoping to do a remix where we get Romain on the track!”

Directed by Jae Synth, the band released a music video for the single that you can enjoy below. You can purchase Mystic Roots new album Change by clicking HERE!

Mystic Roots Background:

As outlined by our Brian Glaser, categorizing or branding Mystic Roots Band in one way or another is a tall order; comparisons and influences have often been stated to include No Doubt, Sublime and Black Eyed Peas. Each member of the band contributes vocals in some fashion which leads to some epic harmonious tones in a bulk of their music –- led by the versatile Katherine Ramirez (who was also featured in Season 7 of American Idol).

The band dropped their first record, Constant Struggle, in 1998 and spent the following years evolving with the times as the industry transitioned into more of a digital platform. Over that time, the band would later re-package the album as they moved from Chico, CA to San Diego, CA. There, they continued to promote Constant Struggle as they played local gigs and toured relentlessly, eventually catching the eye and ear of Pato Banton, whom they supported for a number of years on the road.

Now with a line-up featuring more female-lead vocals, the one constant of the band is the groups founder & vocalist in cootdog who is joined by vocalist Katherine Ramirez, Rabbit on bass/vocals, Marko rockin’ drums/vocals with Korey Ross on guitar/vocals/keys.

Mystic Roots second album, Cali-Hi, didn’t drop until 2010, which was 12 years after their debut record. Cali-Hi was followed by Camp Fire, Vol. 1 – Camp (Roots) that dropped in 2013 with Change being the groups first full-length record since as they continue to build momentum.
