Big B: The Untold Story Behind Album “Wellness Check”

In an exclusive interview, hip-hop artist Big B and his long-time musical partner Johnny Baldaray share insights into their latest project, a new album that marks a significant moment in their careers. With a legacy spanning over 15 years, this collaboration is more than just music; it’s a reflection of their friendship, creative evolution, and a defiant stand against the pitfalls of the music industry.

The Origins of a Musical Partnership
Big B
, known for his diverse musical endeavors, including his work with the Felon’s Club, has always sought to break away from the stereotypical image of a white rapper. His collaboration with Johnny Baldaray began over 15 years ago, when a mutual friend, Jim Perkins, introduced them. Johnny quickly became a crucial part of Big B’s band, helping him transition from rap into a broader musical landscape.

Johnny recalls their early days: “Jim and I were in a band called Dumb Luck, and we’ve always been around, writing music for others. When Big B decided to make a more musical legacy, I was on board, not fully aware of what I was getting into. Fifteen years later, here we are, creating albums that I never thought we’d make.”

FULL INTERVIEW:

The Creative Process Behind the Album
The duo’s latest album is the result of an organic, unplanned process that began in the desert of Joshua Tree. What started as a simple getaway to write a few songs quickly turned into a creative surge, yielding eight to nine solid tracks. “I just wanted to write three songs,” Big B says, “but we ended up with almost an entire album.”

Their approach was laid-back, yet productive. “We’d eat, drink, and make music,” Big B recalls, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balance between work and fun. The result is an album that reflects their authentic selves—an eclectic mix of tracks that don’t adhere to any particular formula.

A Passion Project, Not a Commercial Venture
This album is not just a musical project; it’s a statement. Big B and Johnny both express a deep disdain for the commercial aspects of the music industry. Big B, who once walked away from the business at the peak of his career, admits,

“I genuinely hate the music business, but my love for making music is what keeps me going.”

For Johnny, the album was about fulfilling a creative itch rather than chasing commercial success. “I don’t need to be a rock star,” he says. “This project was about making music that we believe in, without worrying about the industry’s expectations.”

Collaborative Efforts and Featured Artists
The album is a collaborative effort, featuring contributions from various friends and artists. Big B’s daughter, a punk artist known by her stage name, Peachole, is featured on two tracks, marking a special moment for the father-daughter duo. Other notable features include Killer Mike, G Love, Common Kings, and Justin Derrico, Pink’s guitarist.

Johnny reflects on the collaborative nature of the album: “It’s almost like a new business; we’re all partners in it. Sure, Big B’s name is on the sign above the door, but this is a full partnership.”

Conclusion: A Genuine, Unfiltered Record
As Big B and Johnny prepare to release their new album, they do so with no expectations and no fear of disappointment. The album is a reflection of their journey, a mix of fun, creativity, and authenticity. “If no one listens to it, I’ll still be proud,” Big B says.

“This is the music we wanted to make, and that’s all that matters.”

The rebirth of Big B is not just about music; it’s about reclaiming control, setting boundaries, and staying true to oneself. As the album drops, fans can expect a genuine, unfiltered record that stands as a testament to Big B and Johnny’s enduring partnership and creative spirit.
