There’s something magical about the combination of sun, sand, and soulful music that makes Closer to the Sun truly one of a kind. For rising artist, Eli-Mac, this year marked her inaugural performance at the iconic festival, and her excitement was palpable. Known for her smooth blend of reggae, R&B/pop, and island influences, Eli-Mac’s set was a perfect match for the event’s relaxed, beachside atmosphere.
Keeping things going, we’re rolling out the third episode of our Closer To The Sun Artist Debut Series—following our chat with Matthew Roads of Tropidelic and Brandon Hardesty of Bumpin Uglies— where we spill all the festival tea with your favorite first-time performers.
The Pier (TP): Eli, this was your first time at Closer to the Sun! What was the vibe like for you stepping into this tropical music paradise?
Eli-Mac (EM): Closer to the Sun was definitely one of the festivals on my bucket list! The whole weekend is just constant good vibes at all times!
TP: Being from Hawaii, you must feel right at home in this beautiful, sunny atmosphere. How do you think your island roots connect with the festival’s vibe?
EM: Coming from Hawaii, it definitely felt like home being there at Closer. There’s just something about the island energy, the ocean, and the sun that makes me feel so good!
TP: What was the most exciting part of performing at a festival like this, where fans get to mix music, ocean views, and good company?
EM: The best part was being in vacation mode with all my friends, and there were concerts happening every day, all day. No one had to be all dressed up—it’s just beach and pool vibes with the homies. You get to be comfortable and enjoy a vacation with cool people and incredible artists, all in one place for an entire weekend. It’s a dream come true, really.
TP: When you were soaking in all the incredible performances at Closer to the Sun, which artist’s set really resonated with you?
EM: There were so many amazing performances, but if I had to pick one, I’d say Cypress Hill! They had me reliving my elementary, middle school, and high school days. The nostalgia was on max! It felt so good to see them still killing it. I’m a fan for life.
TP: Your sets were on both the pool stage and the beach stage—two spots with their own unique energy. How did you approach creating set lists that matched each vibe while keeping the crowd connected?
EM: We just tried to bring our best for both sets. For the acoustic set, we aimed to sound like a full band but in an acoustic style. Honestly, the crowd’s energy was the real vibe, and they made it special.
TP: With your fusion of reggae, pop, and island vibes, what message do you hope to share with your audience? Did you feel the love at Closer?
EM: My goal is always to empower my audience as much as possible. I want people to leave my show feeling powerful, strong, and confident. I want them to remember they’re special and to love themselves and others because life is short, and we’re so blessed to be alive.
TP: If you could share some do’s and don’ts for anyone heading to Closer to the Sun, what would they be?
EM: Water—lots of water! Eat food! Dress up, go to dinner, and then watch your favorite artist. Make memories with your friends and meet new ones. Soak up every moment and be present for it all. Leave your worries at home and sing your heart out!
Eli-Mac’s debut at Closer to the Sun was nothing short of magical, proving that the festival’s tropical vibes and incredible music create the perfect escape. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or singing along to your favorite artist, it’s all about making unforgettable memories.
