25 years and counting, Fishbone is the Los Angeles bred and based band who has been cited as pioneering and inspiring the careers of everyone from Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Gwen Stefani (No Doubt) to Questlove (the Roots) and Chuck D (Public Enemy).
Through 25 red hot years of trailblazing through rock n’ roll history, 2010 rang in this landmark anniversary for the band with a critically acclaimed, full length documentary Everyday Sunshine: the Story of Fishbone, which debuted at the Los Angeles Film Festival, opening to rave reviews, highlighting the bands legendary 25 year career while showcasing many of the bands trials, tribulations, and ultimately industry wide adulation from all of the aforementioned rock icons as well as stars such as Tim Robbins, Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Les Claypool (Primus), Ice-T, Perry Ferrel (Janes Addiction), and DJ Shadow to name a few. The film is also narrated by Laurence Fishburne.
Marching into 2011 full steam ahead, Fishbone soldiers worldwide have a lot to look forward to including theatrical, broadcast, and DVD releases of Everyday Sunshine, as well as brand new, original Fishbone studio material.
For the band this is the first time in 5 years, since their 2006 release Still Stuck in Your Throat, they have been in the studio writing and recording new material together.
Dating back to November of 2010, members of Fishbone were initially seen in the studio in New Orleans @ Music Shed Studio’s recording a song called smile as part of Zappo’s Delivering Happiness Bus Tour who’s mission is very simply to inspire and be inspired. This one-off session included Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, Dirty Walt, & Dre Gipson as well as guest performances by such NOLA legends as Aaron Neville’s son Ivan Neville on Hammond b3 & vocals, Ian Neville on guitar, Big Sam (Big Sam’s Funky Nation) on trombone with the song Smile, Russell Batiste (Funky Meters) on drums, Khris Royal on sax, and Sista Otis also laying down some vocals.
Following up on this recording, Fishbone returned to Los Angeles inspired themselves and hit D.O’ B Sounds in Sante Fe Springs, CA with original Social Distortion drummer Derek O’ Brien behind the boards engineering the sessions, just this past week and started laying down what is anticipated to be a 6 song EP. Although there have not been any official release dates announced for Fishbone in 2011, sources in the Fishbone camp have in fact confirmed that the band does have new material that they have written and are recording, and are anticipating releasing new music in the Spring or Summer of 2011.
