The eight members of the pioneering east coast reggae band that is John Brown’s Body, are musical surgeons with their instruments during live shows and isolated recording sessions. The future roots veteran band has been announced as performers at the annual Summer Camp Music Festival outside of Chicago, Illinois.
John Brown’s Body will be performing in Chillicothe, Illinois during the three-day music festival taking place over Memorial Day weekend (May 24-26, 2013). For fans holding out hope JBB would be added during the third and final artist announcement for California Roots Music and Arts Festival, taking place that very same weekend, you can now all exhale. For live music fans looking to catch John Brown’s Body before May, they will be performing locally in the northeast before playing in some of Colorado’s finest ski cities in February.
John Brown’s Body is the essence of a memorable live performance. As a fan, one can glance onto the stage and just see JBB enjoying every note and lyric they perform. Tommy Benedetti, drummer and founding member of JBB) described their live performance as stretching, and not the exercise. “We love playing music together, man. We love strechin’. A bunch of us live in Boston and we play music together a lot in town in different formations. We’ve been playing together for a while, and we love stretchin’ things and we pride ourselves on having really big ears. When the moment arises, people know what to do at the right time.
Everybody takes their shot at the proper time. With an 8-piece band everybody can’t be stepping all over everybody. Everybody’s gotta have big ears and you gotta listen and you gotta react. We’re all just reacting to things going on onstage. We’ve been playing long enough, or we’re fortunate enough, to be able to just work off each other.”
It’s not just the sound that makes John Brown’s Body a great live show, the lyrics truly touch your soul. With a song title like, “Give Yourself Over”, nearly seven minutes of inspirational messages burst out of the speakers like an epiphany. With the combination of feel good music and positive messages flowing like running water, the crowd and band truly become one inside any venue JBB performs inside of. They are one band that can truly control the crowd, not by belting out commands or urging chanting, but the music that John Brown’s Body plays, runs straight to your core, and remains with you long after their performance.
