GRAMMY-nominated funk-jazz-soul-hip-hop-psychedelic-jam-experimental titans Lettuce have announced a special edition picture disc edition of their 48-minute improvisational work VIBE exclusively available on Record Store Day on April 20, 2024. Participated record stores and more information can be found HERE. The 48-minute continuous session of pure, free-flowing music just celebrated its digital release in November after a previous limited edition vinyl run and the band is currently on a national tour in celebration of breathing new life into the work.
On VIBE, Lettuce cement their status as boundary-pushing innovators over three decades into their lauded career, blurring the lines and smashing up jazz chords, psychedelic passages, big horns, strains of soul and go-go, hip-hop elements for an uplifting, improvisational sound all their own. Ryan Zoidis explains, “This recording happened during the sessions for Resonate. We had just finished tracking what we had planned on.” He continues, “We got into a vibe and we hit record. 48 minutes went by like a blink of an eye. This is our first purely improvised recording. Nothing planned, nothing edited or overdubbed. This is a true spontaneous musical expression captured in its entirety.”
As Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff calls it, “VIBE is a journey into the universe of psychedelic improvisation.”
A powerhouse collective made up of world-class master musicians, the members of Lettuce – Adam Deitch (drums, percussion, arrangement), Adam “Shmeeans” Smirnoff (guitar), Erick “Jesus” Coomes (bass), Ryan Zoidis (alto, baritone, tenor sax, Korg X-911), Eric “Benny” Bloom (trumpet, horns) and Nigel Hall (vocals, Hammond B-3, Rhodes, clavinet, keyboards) – are also some of the most highly sought-after musicians in the industry with resumes that read like a who’s who in hip-hop, pop, and beyond, working and performing with everyone from Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Questlove, Justin Timberlake, The Fugees, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Britney Spears, Gary Clark Jr., Skrillex, Solange, and so many more. Lettuce’s ever-evolving, genre-bending musical palette and growing catalog has drawn acclaim from NPR, New York Times, Consequence, Billboard, Brooklyn Vegan, Earmilk, HipHopDX, Relix, and more.
To celebrate both the digital release and Record Store Day exclusive LP of VIBE, Lettuce is currently embarking on a national tour with rotating support slots from GRAMMY-nominated, Afro-Cuban Rockstar Cimafunk, DJ sets from keyboardist & vocalist Nigel Hall, and DJ sets from drummer Adam Deitch.
