One of our favorite songs from the new album was “Cali Song” and the band was kind enough to share the song for FREE, for 6 days only with The Pier’s MP3 Leak of the Week! Here’s what song-writer Luke de Villiers had to say with regards to the new single, “Cali Song”:
“I was working this labor job and it was long hours, like 10+ hours, 7 days in a row. And then around that I’ve got to find time to work on my craft and rehearse and gig with different groups around town, and its just getting to be too much. So then there’s the California coast, which is this place I’ve been doing road trips to ever since I was a little kid in the back of my Dad’s VW van; its a place I associate with freedom and the open road. Just driving along, looking at waves with no destination in mind. ‘Cali Song’ isn’t really about the place, it’s about wanting to escape from the same old day to day in the city and just experience life as it happens.”

As for the new album, Luke shares that it was a big step for the group. “Having Craig Welsch (10 ft. Ganja Plant, Slightly Stoopid, G-Love) do the final mix brought tons of life and depth to the tracks. Everything was mixed strictly analog and straight to tape. He’s a really chill dude and easy to work with, plus its great to get the stamp of approval from someone you respect like that.”

GA
Giraffe Aftermath Background:

In the summer of 2006, Steve Hackenbruch and Luke de Villiers of Vancouver, BC walked out of a daytime warehouse job and became the songwriting/production duo they called Giraffe Aftermath. United by the sound of reggae and dub music, they began writing and recording in a makeshift home studio. This project soon evolved into a full live band show and the release of a self titled album in 2008. Joined by the dark groove of Paul Steffes on Bass, they quickly became regulars on the Vancouver music scene, playing a rich blend of deep, danceable music. With the release of Sleepless Nights in 2011 and the addition of jazz musicians Ian Weiss on saxophone and Jocelyn Waugh on trumpet to the roster, Giraffe Aftermath was becoming one of the top dub-reggae acts in Western Canada.

Opening for legends such as Katchafire, The Black Seeds, John Brown’s Body and Macklemore to name a few, Giraffe Aftermath’s live show continuously became more developed. In the summer of 2013, Giraffe Aftermath embarked on their first international tour pairing with San Francisco based ska/reggae band Burnt. The two bands cruised in their matching cream colored Dodge Ram vans from Vancouver, Canada to San Diego, California. The band then returned to Canada, headlining the official Victoria Ska Festival after party and continued to play a series of sold out BC shows.
