New Kingston – “Can’t Stop a Man”
“Can’t Stop a Man” Background:
Kingston City was mostly recorded at New Kingston’s home Kingston Studio as well as some instrumentation at Imperial Sounds, E.N Young’s recording studio. New Kingston produced most of the tracks on the album, but had one song produced by Sydney Mills of Steel Pulse a long with 2 tracks produced by Dub INC from France. The album was mixed by Ziggy Marley’s Grammy Award Winning engineer, Fabian Cooke. The record features collaborations with Tribal Seeds, Kimie Miner, France’s Dub Inc., Sister Carol, The Wailing Souls, and the late, great father of dancehall, Sugar Minott.
When The Pier asked New Kingston about the evolution of their sound from their last album, Kingston University, drummer Courtney Panton responded that the album is: “Way more alive, and way more raw. Kingston City is the voice of the youth dem.”
New Kingston is giving away a brand new song off Kingston City with the track “Can’t Stop a Man”. When we asked New Kingston to provide some insight on the new song, they responded with:
“Can’t Stop A Man” speaks on letting people know that you can’t stop someone who is actually trying to change their lives or working hard towards their goals. Once you work hard at something positive, great things can happen… The song came to be pretty quickly actually. We were all on a vibe saying how so many people try to stop others from being successful and it just clicked to make a song about it. These are things most people have to go through unfortunately in the world we live in.”

New Kingston Background:
NEW KINGSTON formed in 2006 in the basement of their Brooklyn home, when brothers Tahir (keys), Courtney Jr. (drums) & Stephen (guitar) began covering music by the likes of Bob Marley, Earth Wind & Fire, Dennis Brown, Michael Jackson, The Whispers and many more. The three brothers, under the watchful eye of their father (and bassist) Courtney Panton Sr., called themselves New Kingston to appropriately reflect a combination of their Jamaican heritage and their present lives in progressive New York City. The musical styles of both places informed their sound and songwriting.
New Kingston self-released two full-length albums: In The Streets (2010) and Kingston University (2013). They are truly a U.S. reggae band, part of the movement that has revitalized and evolved the genre domestically, never sticking to a stale formula for reggae should sound like. But they are also unique in the current scene in that they are actually second generation Jamaican-Americans, which gives them even more legitimacy than some of their peers when it comes to playing this music.
