Organically Good Trio – “Alakazam”
OGT
“Alakazam” Background:
In speaking with Jon Phillips of Silverback Management about doing some FREE features via The Pier’s MP3 Leak of the Week, the first band he recommended was Organically Good Trio. These guys aren’t quite on the radar of The Pier’s day-to-day which makes them a unique addition to the feature. There are no vocals, just pure instrumental as we debut a new song from Organically Trio’s upcoming Record, w/the track “Alakazam”.

The record, out in July on Stoopid Records, features the amazing skills of Steve Fell on guitar, the reliable soulful grooves of Eric Kalb on drums (John Schofield, Charlie Hunter, Dap Kings) as well as Paul Wolstencroft of Slightly Stoopid on Keys. The album also features a ton of guests including Timo Shanko (G Love), Karl Denson (Greyboy Allstars, Tiny Universe) and Rymo (Slightly Stoopid).

Here’s what keyboard player, Paul Wolstencroft had to say about the new song: ‘Alakazam’ is an instrumental styled after the great organ trio albums of the 60’s. Influences range from Jimmy McGriff to Grant Green and Jack McDuff. This song is a soul jazz type of groove that i learned from playing with the great Melvin Sparks. Melvin was the guitar player for Lou Donaldson and Jack McDuff and was on literally hundreds of jazz records in the 60’s and 70’s. He was a big influence on the younger organ players.

Stay tuned next week for another FREE song from the Silverback Music Management Vault!

Organically Good Trio Background:
Organically Good Trio is a Hammond organ driven roots instrumental group out of Boston. Founded by Slightly Stoopid keyboard player Paul Wolstencroft, the band has a sound reminiscent of the great organ trio albums of the late 60’s. The music takes elements of jazz and incorporates a blues, R&B and church sound. there’s a lot of feeling involved and a lot of Ray Charles influence, and even some hints of reggae.

At times they sound like Grant Green, the Meters or even Jimmy McGriff, but also can have hints of yournger bands such as the Mighty Imperials and the New Mastersounds. There’s a reason they use a Hammond organ in a church; it’s because it’s a very soulful instrument. It’s like an entire orchestra at your fingertips. Often imitated never duplicated, the Hammond organ is the organ sound everyone is after.
