So Roots “Love & Hate” Background:

The August 12th release of the Love & Hate EP is a follow up to the success the group reached with their first single “If I can’t Have You” followed by their debut self-titled EP that dropped Sept. 2014.

To bring Love & Hate to fruition, So Roots teamed up with some of the most respected artists in the island music scene. Among those are: Greg Amanonce, the lead singer of the Jimmy Weeks Project and producer/engineer, Noah Cronin.

So Roots draws on the sounds of Dub Reggae, Roots Reggae, and Lovers Rock. The EP was inspired by the song “Love & Hate” which talks about the struggles of relationships. When discussing the song, the group told The Pier: “Pono Patoc (lead singer) wrote the song to relate to just about every relationship. Where you can’t live without someone but you just can’t stand them at times. There is also some reality to the song as far as our own relationships in the band. We all go through it. We’ve been working on the project for about 6 months.”

So Roots Background:

So Roots band consist of Royce Kaneshiro and Pono Patoc as lead vocals, and Rylan Tokioka playing keyboards, while also providing background vocals. Supporting the band are Lapana Ieriko on drums, Klandon Fetaui on bass, and Gabriel Miller on guitar. The band came into existence as a result of Pono, Royce, and a bunch of friends jamming out in a friends garage. These initial jam sessions incorporated many of their musician friends they made throughout middle and high school. They would spend hours jamming for the simple love of playing music and having a good time, never expecting it to turn into anything serious. After landing a few gigs, they soon realized that there was an opportunity for them to take it to the next level, if they were willing to take the band seriously.
