“One Night” Background:
Nocturnal Gold releases July 31st and contains 13 songs + 3 bonus tracks and features guest appearances by Howi Spangler of Ballyhoo! and Dirt Nasty. THis is the groups 5th release and nationally distributed album. This is the groups first release since 2013’s Suns of Beaches which debuted #1 on the iTunes reggae charts the day it was released.
The group explains the sound of their upcoming release: “Although reggae rock is the main stay for our sound and is what drives our style, we always like to push boundaries with different sounds and make them our own. Adding styles from rap to heavy rock, ska, pop, and even a little country ‘ish’ on one track.”
“One Night” is the leading single from the new 16 track record and it features Howi Spangler of Ballyhoo! on the hook. They produced a music video for the song that you can see below. The group explains: “We started shooting ideas of a feature on the track, but wasn’t sure if we were going to go that direction at all. One of the guys brought up Howi and we all were in the studio and envisioned him with our engineer Matt Martone and all agreed it would be a perfect fit. We reached out to him, and he really dug the feel. After first listen of the final mix, we knew this was the song we were going to lead the album off with, and we just think it’s the perfect fit to start off any summer night right.”
As for what the song is about, the group continues: “…Sometimes people aren’t looking for a relationship or serious commitment, but they still want to have fun for a night with no strings attached. We wanted to play for people who are just looking for a good time and aren’t ready for anything serious or anything like that. It’s open ended too because it’s not saying that the one night won’t lead to something further, but neither side is expecting that at the moment.”
You can purchase Taco & Da Mofo’s new album, Nocturnal Gold, on iTunes, July 31st, 2015
Taco & Da Mofos Background:
Taco & Da Mofos are a 5 piece reggae-rock group from Jackson/Memphis, TN. The group includes Taco on Vocals/Guitar, Keela on Vocals/Production/Keys, Charlie Mofo on Lead Guitar, Reno on Drums and Boggy on Bass.
Here’s a back-story of Taco and Da Mofos as told by Keela:
In the late 90’s/early 2000’s when we were youngsters in high school, Taco would go from house parties to restaurants to book stores to coffee shops and more playing his acoustic reggae tunes all over Jackson and West TN area. We were all around 16 when this all first started. After about a year, he began having this cult following in the area and recorded a little demo CD of him and a karaoke machine that helped spread his name even faster.
He started calling all of his fans/followers “mofos” and all his fans just said they were mofos. When he would first hit the mic at any of his acoustic shows he would start off by saying “what up mofos!”. He started his first band soon for about 6 months after after his popularity from acoustic shows really boomed, however that didn’t pan out, but he stayed with the band notion and kept rolling.
So when he approached me (we’d been friends since childhood and I was working on my own music endeavor which was more rap based) and said we should team up to form a band, it was a natural thing to just call it Taco & Da Mofos to make the band more for the fans since the local cult following were already going by mofos. We recorded and released a band album with no label, national, or even regional push to see the reaction and it spread like wild fire and we sold over 10,000 copies in less than a year, and being around 18 years old at the time we all were like “Holy Shit!” and were all in from then on out…fast forward to today and like the track ‘Sayonora Butterfly’ off our new album states in the chorus “been a long journey on this road from here to now” we’re here now stronger than ever and with plenty experience to match.
And how Taco got his name – We were around 13 years old at a swimming pool where all the kids use to hang, and him and this one kid started joking and busting on each other in a total just for fun matter. Taco (being the jokester and guy who loves to laugh) started pulling out stuff left and right and the crowd of kids were laughing
hysterically at his jokes, and the only come back the one kid could come up with was “well, you look like a big….Taco”. And from then on all the kids started calling him Taco and he was cool with it. Even his Thai mom calls him Taco!
