The Ellameno Beat’s “Too Deep” Background:

The Ellameno Beat’s Party Wave EP was released in April 2015, and dropped at #3 on the iTunes Reggae Chart and #11 on the Billboard Reggae Chart as their introduction to showcasing their own progressive roots sound.

The first track off the EP, and our featured Leak of the Week, is “Too Deep.” Lead singer Reggie Froom started humming the melody in January 2015 and told The Pier, “I was living in Jax Beach in an apartment with no heat, right next to Joe’s Crab Shack,” when he wrote the song.

Once the lyrics and the chords were established, Rebecca (Becky) Minor, who is a classically trained singer and pianist, was able to lock down the harmonies alongside Reggie and Matt Diamond. The horns came later as trumpet/vocalist, Matt Diamond, was quickly able to master the horn riff that Reggie had written.

Reggie explains: “Too Deep is simply a tribute to the emotional life I’ve led thus far. Like many of the songs I’ve written, it is an expression of the memories and challenges that have shaped me as an artist and a person. It is inspired by my endless struggle to find balance in life and is communicated in surf-inspired metaphors that represent my escape and passion. Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows; I like to respect and honor both the positive and negative aspects that affect and inspire me, and I tried to summarize that motif in the song.”

The song has since become a band and fan favorite. Matt Diamond tells The Pier: “Too Deep is a special song for me and always one I look forward to closing each set with. It is a song that begs not to be rushed. By playing the horn line with a little slack and letting the horns drag off the beat very slightly, we can keep the tune relaxed and give a little space for the lyrics to shine through. It is also one of my favorites to sing backups on. I feel the impact at live shows when the lyrics are echoed back to us by loyal fans who all love to sing along with us and become a part of our music.”
