“Makin’ Love” Background:
As mentioned inside our 2016 Most Anticipated Albums feature, The Fiction consists of former Bargain Music frontman Josh Fischel paired with Kris Jackson as they will be releasing their debut 11 track record in early 2016.
Actually, the album is done and they’re just sorting out the artwork and packaging to assure they get this release right. The title of the record is Quixotic, which means marked by rash, lofty, romantic ideas; fitting as the release took about 7 years to complete. As Josh details, “The vast majority is just Kris and I in a room together. Kris and I are very long time collaborators and great homies. Working with that dude is a damn pleasure. We also have a Ween cover band called Stallion. KILLER group of musicians.”
The album was mostly recorded in three of Kris’ home studios throughout the years in their hometown of Long Beach, CA.
The song “Makin’ Love” is the final track on the record as Josh explains: “I wrote this song in my friend Arne’s Harlem, NY apartment in 2006, I think. For you jazz fans, it was actually Duke Ellington’s apartment for many years. Arne and I lost touch and I brought this song to my partner in The Fiction, Kris, a few years ago. Our version is way different than the original but the lyrics and melody are the same. I really love this version because each part is a nod to an artist I love. The breezy falsetto of the vocal is clearly Prince meets the Beach Boys, the beat is Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’, the bass is pure Flaming Lips, the guitar is ripped from Spandau Ballet’s ‘True’, the bridge is right out of the Ween playbook and the ‘stuck here on the back porch’ part is straight 70’s indie soul. You can’t tell until you hear the whole thing but the outro part is the over lapping of 5 other songs from the album. Fun shit. I hope y’all like it.”
This is why music needs Josh Fischel. So much great depth and appreciation for music, it pours out into his writing and “Makin’ Love” happened to be my favorite track on the record. I was very excited when agreed to put it up for FREE download and with his background on the track, I’m diggin’ it even more!
The album is set to drop at any time and we can’t wait for everyone to hear the final product. Here’s what Josh concludes with regards to the new record: “My songwriting style has always been really eclectic but this one explores new ground. There’s elements of soul, 60’s and 70’s Brit rock, garage rock, hip-hop, electronica, gospel, acoustic and a little dub. Personally, I think it’s my strongest group of songs. It might take some people by surprise but if they listen for a minute, I think they’ll really dig it. I can’t wait for you bastards to hear it!”
As soon as we receive news on the official release date, we will update everyone – stay tuned!
