After four long years, Hawai’i’s The Green released a brand new album titled Marching Orders via Easy Star Records on Oct. 20th. The Green’s “Feel So Cool” Background:

On October 20th, 2017, The Green released their fourth studio album since 2010 and their first in four years. The album includes 14 total tracks with guest appearances by Eric Rachmany of Rebelution, Fiji, J Boog, Busy Signal, and The Mana’o Company. The album shows them returning with their signature progressive Hawaiian flavor of R&B, Reggae and Roots rhythms around love ballads that is only topped by their 3-4 part vocal harmonies.

One song on the record, “Feels So Cool” took on new inspiration. While the song has singer JP Kennedy urging a girl to “Cruise around the island in my ’69 Chevelle,” the song wasn’t written by them, but its a song they recorded and now perform in honor of their fallen friend who passed away back in 2014. Here’s what the group shared with The Pier regarding the background of “Feels So Cool.”:
“It was written by a very close friend of everyone in the band, Keoni Nicodemus of Kaneohe, Hawaii, and he recorded a few songs at JP’s studio around the same time when we recorded our debut album in 2008. “Feel So Cool” was one of these tunes that Keoni meant to release as his own project but sadly passed before being able to do so. The Nicodemus family has graciously allowed us to release this song as our own, thanks in part to our merch manager/brother Justin Kalawaia, who was in a band called Kanalo with Keoni back in the day. Kanalo had a lot of success in Hawaii in the early-mid 2000’s. We are honored to be able to celebrate and pay tribute to our friend by releasing this song.”

The Green Background:

The Green is a six piece roots reggae-R&B-soul band from the islands of Hawai’i. The band quickly found momentum with the release of their first album—2010’s “The Green.” The debut album’s success led to a record deal with Easy Star Records and the band’s sophomore album with 2011’s Ways & Means and again with their third release, Hawai’i 13 that dropped in 2013. Four years later and The Green has released their fourth studio record and third straight with Easy Star Records.

As the Press Release perfectly surmises, before The Green, no Hawaii-based reggae band had crossed over to the mainland and become one of the biggest bands in the genre. No Hawaii-based reggae band had been able to deliver radio-friendly pop hits, inspiring anthems, and drum-and-bass heavy reggae grooves inspired by foundational bands like Aswad and Steel Pulse. The Green has accomplished all of this and much more in their groundbreaking career, and now have gone even further with Marching Orders.
