“Hi Power” Background:
Every once in awhile a brand new band or artist will smack you with surprisingly good music. That was the case with my introduction to The Late Ones. They’re currently based out of Laie, Hawai’i (near the North Shore) and had it not been for The Pier’s trip to Hawai’i, we may not be celebrating their new EP today.

Back in February, The Pier was invited out by EKM Records to Honolulu, HI to a private listening party of theirs to introduce us to some of the up and coming artists they work with. Among the groups that we first met that night were The Late Ones who made an immediate impression. As individuals, they were high energy, all positive and very embracing to everyone around them. They were the first to greet us as we entered the venue and continued to hang out with us the rest of the evening, before and after their set. They felt like familiar strangers. We had never met them before, but it felt as we if we knew them for years after interacting.

On stage, they performed a blend of Roots inspired Reggae with Hip-Hop and 3-Part harmonies, rich with soul and R&B. My first impression was they were very similar to The Green only The Late Ones carry more of a hip-hop influence to their sound. A few months later and we’re excited to hear that their debut EP is a strong replica of the energy and soul you hear when listening to them perform live.

In late 2014, The Late Ones recorded their debut EP at Sea Major Seven Studio in Honolulu, HI with engineer Noah Cronin and producers Lapana Ieriko and Klandon Fetaui.

The Late Ones debut EP Revelate was released on May 5, 2015 via all online distribution outlets featuring 6 brand new songs. Of the 6 songs, The Pier was given permission to give away track 5, “Hi Power”, away for FREE download this week.

Here’s what the group had to say with regards to the track: “‘Hi Power’ is a message for the youth to be wise and make good conscious decisions. Be smart, and open minded to the world that we are all a part of. Sonically, we wanted to capture our fun and chill vibe, as well as the laid back and easy-going lifestyle that we live in coming from Hawaii. Hi Power… living in higher thoughts.”

The Late Ones - Live In Hawaii
The Late Ones Background:
Based out of Laie, Hawaii, brothers Tui Avei (Lead vocals), and Tau Avei (Vocals), along with cousin Josh Brunson (Vocals) are the voices. Built on a roots reggae foundation with influences from various genres like Hip-hop, R&B, and jazz, The Late Ones’ unique blend of style, and harmony shapes a youthful, yet old school reggae vibe.

Born in Gardena, California, The Late Ones harness something undeniably special. Rooted in Samoan culture, and complimented by the group’s African American heritage, the familial bond between the three members transcends throughout the group’s conscious lyrics and catchy melodies.

The name “The Late Ones” pays tribute to all of the late and great revolutionaries who have come and gone like Bob Marley, Tupac, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Biko, and John Lennon, just to name a few. It is the fusion of each revolutionary story, struggle, and message that inspires and resonates with The Late Ones’ own story, struggle, and love for all genres of music. That is the “L81Z” sound.
