On This Day Sublime Played Their First Show July 4th 1988

The 4th of July is a time of celebration and surrounding yourself with friends and family. On this day we also remember that Sublime was born on July 4, 1988 playing their first show at Harbor Peninsula, a small club in Long Beach, California. As legend has it, Sublime members Bud Gaugh, Eric Wilson, Troy Nowell and Bradley Nowell’s performance was so well received that it initiated a small-scale riot, now referred to as the Peninsula Riot.

Sublime’s contributions to the genre can never be understated and are still felt to this day. The trio’s fusing reggae grooves, punk grittiness, ska energy, back-porch folk introspection and hip-hop swagger laid the groundwork for the entire genre.
