Released in 1975, “Marcus Garvey” is regarded as one of the most influential reggae albums of all time. The album was produced by Jamaican artist Winston Rodney, known as Burning Spear.  The albums is  powerful celebration of African culture and heritage. Establishing Burning Spear as one of the most important and truly respected reggae artists of his generation.

“Marcus Garvey”  helped to popularize Rastafarianism and its teachings.

The album was named after the Jamaican political activist Marcus Garvey. A key figure in the early 20th-century black nationalist movement. Burning Spear’s music draws heavily on Rastafarianism, which sees Garvey as a prophet and advocate for black liberation.

“Slavery Days,” is a powerful ode to the suffering endured by enslaved Africans and their descendants. The song’s haunting melody and poignant lyrics make it a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of slavery and the ongoing struggle for racial equality and social justice.

Burning Spear’s powerful and distinctive voice, coupled with his use of traditional African rhythms and melodies, helped to establish a new style of reggae music that was both deeply rooted in African culture and highly innovative. Moreover the album’s influence can still be felt today, with many contemporary reggae artists drawing inspiration from Burning Spear’s innovative approach to music and his commitment to social justice.

A music-maker, community icon, educator, spiritual uplifter; Burning Spear’s importance to culture existed before the media spotlight, and has only grown since.

For nearly four decades and more than 25 albums. Burning Spear has carried the torch of the gospel of political activist Marcus Garvey. Promoting self-determination and self-reliance for African descendants through lyrics and rhythms that truly deliver the messages of peace and love to all.
