With the summer season in full swing, as well as the alternative music monstrous traveling Warped Tour in full swing, five-time Warped veterans Reel Big Fish are set to release their seventh studio album on July 31st, 2012. Reel Big Fish has long been known for their innovative and comical album titles and this upcoming rendition is no different, as the forthcoming album is titled, Candy Coated Fury.
Reel Big Fish made a name in the music industry as being one of the flagship bands to put the ska-punk style onto the doorstep of mainstream popularity. In the mid-1990s, Reel Big Fish was painted all over pop culture mediums after the band’s 1996 release of Turn the Radio Off, which featured such radio hits as “Sell Out”, “Beer” and “She Has A Girlfriend” that happened to feature fellow ska-punk vocalist Monique Powell of Save Ferris. Turn the Radio Off peaked at #54 on the Billboard charts Top 200 and remained there for an incredible 32 weeks.
If you are still unfamiliar with the band, perhaps you saw the live band performing throughout the movie BASEketball, written by the creators of South Park, that was Reel Big Fish. Needless to say, Reel Big Fish has been a mainstay for nearly twenty years, and with their upcoming release there are no signs of slowing down.
Candy Coated Fury via Rock Ridge Music will be an album comprised of all new, original music. Reel Big Fish’s founding vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Aaron Barrett posted on their website stating, “This album is a lot like our first two albums. It’s got a lot of the same intensity, frantic energy in the music, and the same sarcastic sense of humor. I think these are the fastest songs we’ve done since those albums.”
Perhaps to many viewers, this might seem like a blast from the past, yet Reel Big Fish has been grinding away making music nearly nonstop since their perceived heyday. Although going back to trying to recreate the magical music the band released in the 90s, will surely bring the humorous skanking songs to a whole new generation of music lovers, and longtime ska punk fans alike.
