San Diego, California based reggae-jam band, Slightly Stoopid, is kicking off their 2013 musical year with the bright lights shining. Their winter tour with Marlon Asher begins on January 9th in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but the long-awaited debut of Slightly Stoopid’s TRI Studios Session from 2011 is set to debut!
There are plenty of electrifying excitement brewing from the Slightly Stoopid camp. The upcoming winter tour will hit “Ese Loco” nesting grounds along the fertile west coast. In the tour’s entirety, Slightly Stoopid and Marlon Asher will hit 14 cities across the southwest and pacific coast. Also, a special added feature for fans along the Pacific Coast, the highly acclaimed saxophonist and unofficial eighth member of Slightly Stoopid, Karl Denson, will be joining the tour beginning in Santa Cruz, CA. One western state that will not be featured on this particular tour will be Colorado. Strategically, Slightly Stoopid has not performed in the state of Colorado since the 2012 Unity Tour with 311 and SOJA. Somewhat reluctantly, fans will have to wait until April 20th for their next live encounter with Slightly Stoopid, but the 420 Hot Box at Red Rocks will be one of those once in a lifetime shows.
Although, one hidden gem that has been resting quietly, awaiting the moment in which to properly debut, the long awaited Slightly Stoopid & Friends: Live at Roberto’s TRI Studios will be premiering on the Palladia Network on Friday January 18th, 2013 at 9:00pm ET.
The Pier was fortunate to receive a sneak peak preview of the recording last spring, and when we spoke to Miles Doughty (singer/guitarist/bassist) of Slightly Stoopid, he explained his thoughts and reactions to performing with such an all-star lineup: “Looking back when you have an opportunity to play with those kinds of cats, all you have to do is show up! Everything else, just happens, it all comes together smoothly. Playing with Bob Weir, Karl Denson, Don Carlos, Ian and Ivan Neville and all the boys in Stoopid, it’s like the ultimate arsenal! It was like a dream come true! I always thought it would be kind of a cool way to tour like that, just because the band sounds so massive and everyone goes off on solos. We were all just having fun playing together! Musically, I thought it was really cool with all of the stuff that is going on in the songs, that aren’t usually there. It’s just a little butter on the toast!”
As of right now, there is no set in stone date for a physical release of Slightly Stoopid & Friends: Live at Roberto’s TRI Studios. However, in The Pier’s upcoming article highlighting 2013’s Most Anticipated Albums, we will go into more detail as to when to expect a release and of what material. Certainly, a live DVD is high on all devoted fans’ priority, since the band’s sound has become so profound since Slightly Stoopid added additional band members to their repertoire. Although as Miles Doughty discussed, Slightly Stoopid has tons of recorded and unreleased music to be heard!
“I mean, we have recorded a lot of songs,” Doughty said. “We tracked enough songs where we can keep releasing new albums, almost every six months if we wanted to. Now that we have our own studio, we have the ability to record whenever we want, but at the same time, we sit there sometimes and over analyze certain things and ideas we have. Just having that ability to have that at your disposal is great.”
With that statement in mind, and the subtle whispers of a heavy punk oriented album next in line, especially after the Top of the World album finale, “Intro to Organics”, there is always excitement billowing from everything Slightly Stoopid. Looks like all the readers will have to stay tuned for all the latest updates to come on The Pier to find out the rest!
