SUBLIME HISTORY WITH EDDIE VILLA: ON THIS DAY Sublime Played Board Aid at Moose McGillycuddy’s (1994)

On March 1, 1994, Sublime took the stage at Moose McGillycuddy’s in San Diego for Board Aid presented by SRH, a local benefit show that captured the band in their pre-mainstream, road-warrior era.

The bill that night also featured Sprung Monkey, Spitball, Downset, Sunchild, and special guests Ghoulspoon — a snapshot of the SoCal alternative and punk crossover scene that Sublime were actively helping define. The venue, located at 1165 Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, was a regular stop for regional acts grinding it out before radio and major-label attention came calling.

Longtime Sublime documentarian and friend Eddie Villa has often pointed to this stretch of early 1994 as a pivotal period for the band — a time when Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh were tightening their live set, testing new material, and building a fiercely loyal Southern California following. Just months later, songs that had been road-tested in rooms like Moose’s would find their way onto what became Robbin’ the Hood (released October 1994).
