Los Angeles’ classic roots group The Expanders are prepared to release a new album on September 29th, 2017. The Expanders will drop Old Time Something Come Back Again, Vol. 2, a collection of “deep cuts” and classic covers, in the 2nd installment of their cover series. Old Time Something Come Back Again, Vol. 2 will release via Easy Star Records.
As true students of classic Jamaican music, The Expanders have developed a soulful, throwback reggae sound that separates themselves from the rest of the American reggae scene. The 5-piece group out of Los Angeles broke out after the release of their acclaimed 2015 album Hustling Culture. The Expanders are formed by John Asher (drums/vocals), John Butcher (guitar/vocals), Roy Fishell (organs), Chiquis Lozoya (bass/vocals), and Devin Morrison (guitar/vocals).
Vol. 2 of the series offers a new slate of songs covering classic artists like Burning Spear, The Ethiopians, The Gladiators and more. Differing from Vol. 1, which consisted of songs The Expanders had already been incorporating into their live set, Vol. 2 features songs the band had never played before. This created a new challenge of picking up and executing each song from the ground up. The band’s aim to capture their natural sound and to maintain continuity in their cover series was nurtured by longtime collaborator and producer Tom Cook. Another goal for The Expanders on the album was to take listeners on a journey through the evolution of reggae music.
