Touring is a lifestyle for the successful bands within the reggae-rock community. Two of the more consistently driven bands will be teaming up for the Life’s A Beach Tour this spring. The headlining band will be non other than Santa Cruz, California’s The Expendables with guests Tomorrows Bad Seeds!
The Expendables and Tomorrows Bad Seeds have linked up in the past, but never for more than a handful of shows. Now, fans that were begging for this tour to come to fruition are in luck. The reggae-rock-punk rock tag-team duo will be coming together for over 30-dates, kicking off in California on March 5th and closing out the tour on April 14th in Chico, California. In between those two local California shows, The Expendables and Tomorrows Bad Seeds will hit both coasts and the heartland in between.
Along with this tour, in recent shows the return of The Expendables’ bassist, Ryan DeMars has been a shining star. DeMars was sidelined from The Expendables fall DomiNation Tour 2012 with Iration because of his prior diagnosis of having Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. During that span, Eric Walsh of Pour Habit filled the huge shoes of DeMars on bass, without missing a step throughout the tour.
When The Pier spoke to DeMars regarding his treatment and the ongoing process of beating Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma saying, “I’m doing and feeling pretty good at the moment. My last scheduled treatment is on December 21st and I’m looking forward to moving on from all this craziness. I’ve been home in Santa Cruz taking my time recovering since August 2012. The type of cancer I had was a slow acting Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma but it was acting aggressively. So my oncologist wanted an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy. Basically my chemo cocktail is called RCHOP, a mix of strong chemical drugs, and I get it every 3 weeks through an I.V. for 6 treatments. The infusion takes about 6 hours and side affects feel like an extreme hangover/flu for about 9 days then I slowly start feeling better all the way to the 3 week mark when I go through the cycle all over again. After my first treatment we were optimistic when my arm pain went away and when the original lump in my armpit disappeared as well. My doc said that after the 6th treatment I should be good as ever and free to move on but for me I need to see the PET CT scan to show I am cancer free. My next scan will probably be in mid January. DeMars continued on to say, “My doc doesn’t want me on stage until February 2014 but I will be doing all shows from here on out.”
As all four original members return to the stage, this tour seems to be the proper way to kickoff their touring season in 2013. After spending time in 2012 writing and recording an acoustic album, Gone Soft, these shows might feature new and unreleased music set for The Expendables next studio album release.
With The Expendables and Tomorrows Bad Seeds sharing the stage together, from coast to coast, this entire tour will be one big must see event!
