Never thought we would ever publish a Katy Perry related song or video but it appears that the pop-star is taking some dancehall influence with her new music as she taps Skip Marley as a guest feature to her new song “Chained to the Rhythm.” The song still has her pop flair but accented by a reggae cadence and dancehall rhythm. The video was filmed at Six Flags Magic Mountain and if anything, this is a break-out moment for Bob Marley’s grandson, Skip, who provides much needed edge to the track as he graces the song similar to how Lady Saw was featured on No Doubt’s Underneath It All, dishing his verse toward the end of the track. Perry supported the release of Skip’s latest single, “Lion,” on social media, calling the Jamaican singer, “the voice of our REVOLUTION.”
“Chained to the Rhythm” was premiered live on television at the 59th Grammy Awards on CBS. One thing is clear with this song — reggae and it’s dancehall sensibilities appear to be furthering its way into pop music and culture. What’s next? Taylor Swift collaborating with Gentleman? Justin Bieber with Marcia Richards? We love how reggae and its many branches are continuing its momentum of influence. What do you think of the song?
