10 Things to Know Before You Go to Cali Roots

By Mia Moore

The California Roots Music and Arts Festival 2024 is finally upon us. The three-day festival at the Monterey County Fairgrounds is a celebration of all things reggae, good vibes, and community. To make the most of your experience, here are 10 essential tips:

 1. Dress in Layers
The festival takes place on the coast in Monterey, California, where the weather can be anything from socked in fog to warm and sunny so be sure to dress in layers. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.

2. Pack Light
Bring only the essentials: a small *clear* backpack with your ID, cash/credit card, phone, portable charger, and a jacket for the evening. Check the festival’s website for a list of allowed and prohibited items.

3. Get a Locker
Lockers come in clutch for having a secure place to store your layers and they have chargers for Apple and Android phones. The lockers are 8” x 12” x 18” so you will even have plenty of room for an entire outfit change if need be.

4. Wear quality Footwear
Between multiple stages and perusing vendors and activations, you will be covering a lot of ground. Wear shoes that are comfortable and that can handle a bit of dust.

5. Plan Your Schedule
With multiple stages and a packed lineup, it’s a good idea to plan which acts you don’t want to miss. Download the festival app or grab a schedule when you arrive. Allow some flexibility for discovering new artists and enjoying spontaneous moments.

6. Arrange your Transportation Ahead of Time
When 13,000 people hit the streets it is almost impossible to find an Uber or Lyft. Make arrangements ahead of time to ensure you’re not out of luck and waiting hours after the show ends to get to where you are going. If you are skating or biking in, enjoy the free valet near Gate 8 to stash your ride!

7. Explore the Art and Activities
Beyond the music, Cali Roots features live art installations, workshops, and various activities. Build time into your schedule to experience all the amenities the festival has to offer.

8. Stay Hydrated
Bring a camelback or refillable water bottle so you can replenish your water reserves at the free water stations located throughout the festival.

 9. Arrive to Headliners Early
If you are deadset on catching a specific act, get to the stage early to get a prime location. If you’re headed to the main stage, consider bringing a blanket to claim your spot and to have a place to chill while waiting.

10. Pace yourself
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Get enough rest between days & sets, and support local food vendors by eating regular meals. With vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, there’s something for everyone.

Bonus Tip: Enjoy the Surrounding Area
Monterey is a beautiful area with plenty to offer. If you have time, explore the local attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, and nearby beaches. It’s a perfect way to extend the good vibes beyond the festival.

With these tips in mind, you’re all set to have an unforgettable time. Embrace the rhythm, soak in the vibes, and connect with the amazing community that is Cali Roots. Let the music uplift your spirit, the art ignite your creativity, and the collective feels of the festival create memories that will last a lifetime. Here’s to good times, good music, and the world-class magic of Cali Roots!
