SUBLIME HISTORY WITH EDDIE VILLA: ON THIS DAY IN 1996, SUBLIME PLAYED THE BEACH IN LAS VEGAS

Thirty years ago today, Sublime took the stage at The Beach for a performance that now stands as a snapshot of the band in their final stretch before tragedy would strike later that spring.

The show took place on March 4, 1996, just two months before frontman Bradley Nowell passed away on May 25, 1996, shortly before the release of Sublime’s self-titled album. By early 1996, the Long Beach trio had already built a devoted underground following through relentless touring and the grassroots success of their previous album, Robbin’ the Hood.

The newly resurfaced footage — filmed by Joe Rich — captures the band performing during a period when their blend of punk, reggae, ska, and hip-hop was beginning to reach a much wider audience.

At the time of this performance, Sublime were actively touring behind material that would soon appear on their self-titled 1996 record, the album that would ultimately introduce songs like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way” to mainstream radio.
