West Coast, by-way-of Maryland, emcee Wax is back with another high-energy release, teaming up with K.A.A.N. and Jarren Benton for the new single “Pay Up.” The track is the third preview of Wax’s upcoming collaborative album with producer DJ Hoppa titled Highway Hotel, which is set to be released June 5 through Ineffable Records.
“Pay Up” brings together three distinct voices from the independent hip-hop scene. The track blends Wax’s signature mix of witty lyricism and laid-back charisma with the rapid-fire delivery that K.A.A.N. is known for, and the gritty Southern energy of Jarren Benton. The result is a fast-paced collaboration that highlights each artist’s style while riding over DJ Hoppa’s punchy production. The single continues to build anticipation for Highway Hotel, a project that is shaping up to be one of Wax’s most collaborative releases in recent years.
The upcoming album features a stacked lineup of guest appearances from across the alternative and underground hip-hop world. Along with K.A.A.N. and Benton, the record also includes appearances from Watsky, Little Stranger, G. Love, ¡MAYDAY!, Demrick, and Krysta Youngs. The diverse list of collaborators hints at a project that blends hip-hop with elements of funk, alternative rap, and singer-songwriter influences.
Wax and DJ Hoppa have built a strong creative partnership over the years. Hoppa frequently handles production while Wax delivers his recognizable mix of humor, storytelling, and introspection. That chemistry also carries over to their live performances. The duo wrapped up a 27 date headlining tour across the United States and Canada at the end of last year, bringing their catalog and new material directly to fans ahead of the Highway Hotel rollout.
With “Pay Up” now out and more singles expected leading up to the album’s release, Wax and DJ Hoppa continue to build momentum for the project. If the early releases are any indication, Highway Hotel will highlight Wax’s continued evolution as an artist while showcasing the wide range of collaborators that helped bring the record to life.
