Tribute To The Reggae Legends Festival

‘Tis the season for festival announcements! This President’s Day, Monday, February 17th, WorldBeat Productions will hold the Tribute To The Reggae Legends Festival in San Diego, California!

Originally known as Bob Marley Day, this event has been celebrated in “America’s Finest City” for 33 years and counting. The festival’s organizers at WorldBeat Productions have been responsible for bringing together some of the top acts in reggae to this event for many, many years. Previous artists to play the festival include Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bunny Wailer, Mikey Dread, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Burning Spear, Lucky Dube, Jimmy Cliff and the brightest stars from Africa, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

Makeda Dread, the festival’s founder, was a personal friend of Bob Marley and after his untimely passing in 1981, Makeda created the festival as a dedication to Mr. Marley. In the beginning, Bob Marley Day was held at smaller venues & as the years went by, the festival’s popularity grew and Makeda was forced to move the event to establishments with larger capacity.

As the search went on, WorldBeat Productions linked up with Moss Jacobs, who according to the organization “brought his expertise and professionalism to bring the event to large capacity venues such as the San Diego Concourse (Golden Hall) and California Theatre.” The event’s success continued and even after the move, these venues began selling out. As a result, Bob Marley Day moved its’ reggae music celebration to the San Diego Sports Arena.

After 10 years of continued success and consistently reaching capacity at every venue, Bob Marley Day became known as the Tribute To The Reggae Legends Festival in honor of the greatest reggae artists this world has ever known.

As an added bonus for this year’s festival, WorldBeat Productions will be conducting its first ever “Reggae Legends Hall of Fame” inside the WorldBeat Cultural Center in San Diego’s Balboa Park. According to the organization, “this Hall of Fame will honor the legacy of the Artists who are the Foundation of the Reggae Movement and are past and present without proper recognition.”

Artists to be inducted at the 2014 Legends Festival include Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Gregory Isaacs, Junior Marvin, Jacob Miller, Mikey Dread, Lucky Dube, Don Carlos, Sly & Robbie, Horace Andy, Earl Zero, Sister Nancy and Willi Williams.

The Tribute To The Reggae Legends Festival will be held on February 17th at the Valley View Casino Center, formerly known as the San Diego Sports Arena. This annual festival is one of Southern California’s largest reggae events so if you are in Southern California and the surrounding areas make sure to purchase your tickets early because this event is sure to stay true to form and sell out!
