E.N Young’s New Album: Call On Me Background:
E.N Young took us by surprise when he suddenly announced he would be releasing a new full length album. We thought it may have been hype for April fools, similar to what he did in the past when he fooled his fans that he had shaved his dreads. I’m still not sure where he finds the time between his contributions to Tribal Seeds, Roots Musician Records and his production work with producing other artists out of his own recording studio of Imperial Sound in San Diego, CA.
The album is called Call On Me and is 11 total tracks with a few interludes, a couple of remixes and a live track.
One of the remixes on the record is a Melodica version of track 3, “Just Be.” The melodica on this version seemingly takes the place of the originals main vocals, and with the exception of some backdrop harmonies playing as an extra instrument to the song, the version plays as E.N Young’s alter ego in the form of his melodica.
I think one of the album stand-outs is “Waiting For This.” It’s unlike anything you’re use to hearing from E.N Young and this is a good thing where we still him experimenting with new elements to produce a track that is still in his comfort zone, but just enough outside his norm to attract new listeners and perk the ears of his long time fans.
I’m not as big a fan of the interludes, unless my plans are to own the album on vinyl. They feel more like fillers and are the first to be skipped or forgotten as the album ages in today’s digital world. Track 4, “Get’em Next Time” is a funny interlude where he’s talking to a fan over the radio that’s praising him for his music but suggesting E.N Young’s new music is not roots enough, but telling E.N he’ll “get’em next time.” Then you have a Melodica driven interlude simply titled “Melodica” with track 6, in addition to another song called “Interlude” at track 8. “Interlude” is just a piano ballad, but a sample at what I would love to hear E.N Young do with sampling more with raw acoustic piano ballad-driven songs.
As you might expect, the forthcoming album will be released through Young’s label, Roots Musician Records. In addition to a number of previously unheard tracks on Call On Me, E.N Young included a live version of “Don’t Burn Your Bridges,” which appeared on his 2010 debut album Luck & Chance No More.
