Dubbest “Foolish Man” Background:
If you want to hear Boston reggae performed in a LIVE San Diego setting, then this is your chance with Dubbest new live record Live at the Belly Up. Recorded on July 28, 2016 at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA, the live release features a set-list that includes some of Dubbest fan favorites in addition to never before released tracks, such as “Terra Fermata,” “Daydream,” and “Foolish Man.”
For “Foolish Man,” the group tells The Pier that: “it was originally bassist Sean Craffey’s idea. It started with the four chords that carry through the whole song. Then came lyrics from singer Ryan Thaxter. This song is about not being too hung up on your beliefs, and keeping an open mind to new ideas. Basically, no one can say who’s right. Sometimes we look back at what people of the past took as fact to find that we were way off. Maybe the person we think is crazy is right after all. ‘A foolish man today could be a holy man tomorrow… Let down your guard and say maybe we just don’t know it all.'”
Within six months of making the move to San Diego from Boston, Dubbest landed a sold out show opening for the Wailers at the iconic Belly Up Tavern, known for showcasing an amazing live-sound. With the help of Erik Wainwright of Shoreline Roots on percussion and Derek Brown on keyboards, the performance made for a special night captured in this now ten-track live album.

Dubbest Background:
Dubbest was formed in 2009 by grade school friends Andrew MacKenzie and Ryan Thaxter. The duo also added friend Sean Craffey to the band soon after creation. The band began recording dub ideas in Sean’s living room with Ryan on vocals and drums, Andrew on guitar, and Sean on bass. The trio immediately added their longtime friends Cory Mahoney and Kyle Hancock to the band. With Cory on additional guitar and Kyle on drums, Ryan focused on vocals and the band continued rehearsing and recording demos.
A major decision was made within the group to continue pursuing music and move out to San Diego together. The band constructed a string of New England farewell shows and then made the trek west February of 2016. The band found a house and began grinding into the scene; performing weekly and opening for artists like Barrington Levy and The Wailers, only within a few months of relocating. Dubbest has also already reached Northern California and new markets like Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
