Endless summer torchbearers Ballyhoo! have been hard at work finalizing their sixth studio album and follow-up to their 2013 release Pineapple Grenade, and have recently announced they will be unleashing Girls. to the masses. Girls. will surely attract new listeners while also appealing to their existing, widespread fan base emphasizing more lively, summertime jams than their previous two albums.
Known for their high-energy party mentality, Ballyhoo! have announced that Girls. will be released March 24 on Right Coast Records / Ingrooves Music Group and will feature 12 new tracks with Jared Watson of Dirty Heads featured on the track “She Wants Love,” and you’ll hear the Reel Big Fish horn section on “Ras Vader.”
Girls. will be the first full-length album from the Baltimore-based quartet in four years and Ballyhoo! have already released two of the forthcoming tracks as singles — the reverb-driven and lightly romantic “Mixtape” along with the tropically vibrant self-titled “Girls.”
The Pier recently caught up with lead vocalist and guitarist Howi Spangler in October who offered insight on the overall sound of their forthcoming album:
“We got to be known as a party band, writing songs about drinking, smoking weed and shit like that, and we kind of got away from that with ‘Daydreams’ and ‘Pineapple Grenade.’ Which is fine because I’m really proud of those records… I guess [our music] has always had a really upbeat feel no matter what, but we really want to accentuate it now with our next album.”
Both songs have the classic Ballyhoo! feel that fans have magnetized towards for years. Spangler lends his smoothly commanding voice which continues to steer the ship, drummer Donald Spangler is ever-present with his rhythmic drumming, and Scott Vandrey continues to complete the package with contribution on keyboards. Nick Lucera has also recently joined the group to take over bass duties for J.R. Gregory, and his presence is made evident on the first two offerings from Girls.
