Based out of New Zealand comes Fat Freddys Drop who dropped their fourth studio album with the release of their 9 track LP titled, Bays. It was recorded at their BAYS Studio in Kilbirnie, Wellington a former 1950s HMV vinyl pressing plant…
With the release of BAYS on Oct. 23rd, 2015 Fat Freddy’s Drop has released four studio albums, Based On A True Story (2005) and Dr Boondigga & The Big BW (2009), Blackbird (2013) in addition to two live albums, Live At The Matterhorn (2001) and Live At Roundhouse (2010). Not to mention limited edition vinyl singles, including Midnight Marauders and Hope For A Generation.
Starting off in the 90’s as an improve jam band, Fat Freddys Drop have gone on to reach amazing success in their home country of NZ, Australia and Europe. Bays is the follow up to Fat Freddy’s Drop 2013 release of Blackbird.
The predominantly studio written album of BAYS draws on the lexicon of genres that have come to epitomize the bands’ sound which include, but not limited to Soul, Jazz, Reggae, R&B and Funk. As the press release reads, the album exudes a confidence of a band truly comfortable in their skin.
“It’s been a more creative process writing this album in the studio rather than recording songs which have been well road-tested”, Freddy’s vocalist Joe Dukie said.
Internationally, Fat Freddy’s Drop reputation continues to soar. Blackbird has sold over 200,000 album copies worldwide with the UK, US and Germany becoming the bands strongest markets. This success is reflected by recent live highlights including sold out gigs at London’s 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace and 3x Sydney Opera House shows.
The worldwide BAYS album tour will bring the band back to the UK, for two consecutive nights at 02 Academy Brixton in MARCH 2016.
One question that continues to remain for fans here in the U.S. is WHEN will the 7-piece group make their way back to the states to support a new album in one of their strongest markets? We have posed this question to the group and look forward to sharing their response in our upcoming exclusive interview.
