Jah9 is a Jamaican-born singer-songwriter, poet and producer, who will be releasing her new album, 9, on 9/9/16 via VP Records/Steam Chalice Records. If that’s not enough, and in case you were wondering, this album will include 9 total tracks. She will celebrate her album launch in Nairobi, Kenya during the final leg of her Of The 9 World Tour.
As Jah9 points out, 2016 is the year of the number 9: 2+0+1+6=9. When speaking of the album and the symbolism behind the number 9, Jah9 expresses, “The number 9 is very intentional. It represents the unfolding of the spiral, a renewal in preparation for what is ahead. The Unknown is being embraced and no fear of the darkness: the feminine. The Year of Nine (2+0+1+6) brings this energy. It is thus a most appropriate time to share this vibration.”
As her press release reads: The product of a strong upbringing, by two hard working culturally and politically engaged parents, Jah9 (born Janine Cunningham) is also a university graduate, a multidisciplinary yoga instructor, a youth at risk counselor and a slamming dub-poet champion. The combination of intellectual rigor, real world activism and lyrical musicality is well on display in her sophomore album ‘9.’ Thematically there is no slacking in spiritual advocacy, oppositional militancy or honed and focused tunefulness.
In short, Jah9 is as real as it gets with her art, message and purpose. Her sophomore album, 9, is a release of that art that is as lyrical as it is soulful over bass-driven melodies with a jazzy swagger accented by a healthy balance of bubbling reggae riddims. Collaborators on the album include Andrew Campbell, Brecht De Beover, Wayne ‘Unga’ Thompson and Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith.
The album will drop via premiere reggae label & distributor, VP Records. The signing was announced in June where VP Records CEO Chris Chin made his enthusiasm known, stating: “We are excited to share Jah9’s fusion of reggae, jazz and spoken word to the world. She exemplifies the meaning of multi-talented – boasting sharp songwriting and production skills matched with her soulful voice – and exudes a presence and spirit that resonates with the listener.
