“Spend The Day” Background:
Independently released on July 7th, 2015, Dubbest new album Light Flashes contains 12 brand new tracks as produced by Craig “Dubfader” Welsch of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant over at Rear Window Studios in Brookline, MA.
As the press release reads, the band credits Welsch with taking their music to a higher level of musicianship and authenticity, noting how he draws out the best from each band member and employs a large stock of vintage instruments, such as a Hammond B3 organ and 1950s Fender Stratocasters, to convincingly evoke the 1970s glory days of roots reggae and dub.
On the musician front, the album includes guest appearances by Elliot Martin of John Brown’s Body on backing vocals and 10 Ft. Ganja Plant’s Mark Berney, Jared Sims, and Brian Thomas on horns and Steve D on synthesizer.
The second track on the album is this weeks feature with the song “Spend The Day”. Here is what Dubbest vocalist/keyboardist, Ryan Thaxter had to say about this weeks MP3 Leak of the Week:
“‘Spend The Day’ was a song that came together really quickly. I was playing with a recording program and put together a simple groove starting with the bassline. Then I started hearing the melodies once all the chords were laid over it. The lyrics started to come naturally as well, with the melodies. I knew it felt like a love song so I went with that. The lyrics kind of wrote themselves once I had the part, ‘Maybe come for the evening and tomorrow we can spend the day.’ – It’s basically a song to a girl saying: ‘Let’s put aside all the negative stuff in our lives and get together.”

Based out of Boston, Massachusetts, five-piece reggae band Dubbest has been plugging into the east coast reggae scene since 2009. Members Ryan Thaxter (vocals, keyboards), Andrew MacKenzie (guitar, harmonies), Cory Mahoney (guitar, harmonies), Sean Craffey (bass), and Kyle Hancock (drums) began in the summer of 2009 upon graduating high school. Dubbest’s’ first release came just under a year later, titled Off Dubbat.
Fall of 2011 Brought the single “Heat and Water” which was recorded by Craig Welsch of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant at Rear Window Studios in Brookline MA. The educational recording experience led to the final touches on the second album Avoid The Pier in January of 2012, which was self produced, recorded, and mixed in Kyles basement.
