The group ditched their rudeboy ska sound, venturing into a more Rock approach with their latest EP. “Coexist” Background:
The Turn It On EP drops July 2nd & will be available as a free download for the first week as a gift to fans, and then afterwards it will become available for purchase through iTunes. As another “thank you” to the fans, HB Surround Sound will be giving out 5000 copies of the CD at all their live shows this summer. The recording process was intensive, sometimes spending 24 hours at a time at Revolution 9 Studios in Hollywood, California.
Here’s what vocalist Jake Bushnell had to say about their song, “Coexist”:
“Coexist Is about me meeting my girl at a show on tour last summer. We were opening for SWR, Cypress Hill and Pepper. I met her after our set and we watched the rest of the show together. We stayed in touch and now we are getting married in September. Crazy.”
In regards to their new EP, Jake B told The Pier how excited the group is to take their music down new avenues:
“Turn It On is a slightly new direction for us. We have always been known for taking risks and going to unpredictable places with our music and the Turn It On EP is a place we have always wanted to be musically. ‘Turn It On’ is %100 rock music yet feels exactly like an HB Surround Sound record. We went one solid direction on this 4 song EP and we feel this is our best music ever by far.
HB Surround Sound Background
Straight out of Huntington Beach, CA, HB Surround Sound are no strangers to the music scene. Having formed in the late 90s and putting out 3 albums before taking time off in 2006, HB Surround Sound was known for originally blending Punk Rock, Metal & Reggae. They were responsible in the early 2000s for introducing The Dirty Heads by giving Dustin “Duddy B” Bushnell & Jared “Dirty J” Watson a platform to showcase their talent at live shows.
Over the years, the group has progressed into an original, healthy blend of Ska, Reggae, Rock in the vain of Operation Ivy, Rancid and The Specials. Since their return to the stage after a few years off includes the May 2011 EP release of Back to Reality, the early 2012 release of their EXPLODE EP, their Sept 4th 2012 full length album Get Your Dance On and on July 2nd 2013, HB Surround Sound will release their Turn It On EP.
The EP will branch a bit away from their previous sound by adding more of a rock feel. “Turn It On” will feature four songs, one titled “My Radio” that was released a month ago and was played on the World Famous KROQ. Another track is an old song that was previously released called “Rock and Roll”, but the band has revisited and revamped it. The other two songs, “Coexist” & “Young Again”, will be brand new.
Vocalist Jake Bushnell explains the fresh new sound on the EP, “All we did was go way more of a rock route and we wrote this cluster of rock songs that deviate away from ska and anything in that world. They turned out to more alternative indie punk rock so we put all four songs on this EP, which is how it really differs from anything else. This is just a rock EP four songs that kinda kick ass.”
On the tour they’ll be playing classic songs, new stuff, and everything in between. Joining Sublime with Rome, Pennywise, Julian Marley, Kottonmouth Kings, The Descendants and more, the tour will span the entire nation working from the East Coast back to the West Coast. The culmination of the tour will be the last show at Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado.
