“Queremos Paz” Background:

Alameda Sound comes courtesy of Jay Smilee and Franjah Tiken who have presented their second one riddim aptly titled “Dem A Ready”. Production of the riddim, which is a mixture of new roots with a dancehall rhythm paired with digital details on the final cut, comes courtesy of Franjah.

Production took place at Legalize Sound Studio in El Coronil, Spain with Burian Fyah on guitar and Mario Garcia at the controls as engineer and arranger.

DEM A READY is a one riddim album with the collaboration of 15 artists whose end result is 11 songs showing that in the same riddim you can get many different ideas, and proves that music is infinite in terms of melodies and possibilities.

The riddim line up consists of artists from different countries and regions. From Andalusia, Europe, the Caribbean, Africa, Central America and the US. It is also the first one riddim featuring many singers of the city, Seville. The line up is made up of:
Hirie (California)
Ojo de Buey (Costa Rica)
Virtus (Italia)
J.Life (Barbados)
Malaka Youth (Málaga)
All B (Sevilla)
Carla Tapia (Madrid)
Punaman (Ceuta)
Dadda Wanche (Islas Canarias)
Jay Smilee (Sevilla)
Lashe (Córdoba)
Indrani (Barbados)
Burian Fyah (Sevilla)
Ale Cala (Sevilla)
Rashabba (Sevilla)

As for how HIRIE became involved in this project, resulting in our MP3 Leak of the Week, Hirie’s camp shares with us that: “In March of 2015, Franjah Tiken of Alameda Sound reached out to Chris, the sax player from HIRIE about a potential collaboration with HIRIE on a riddim he was producing. Fran was thrilled to talk about his favorite American reggae groups such as Rebelution, Tribal Seeds, Giant Panda Guerrilla Dub Squad and HaleAmanO, and how they bumped HIRIE tunes at parties in their scene and were putting out mix tapes of Cali and other American reggae groups because they dig the sound so much. And so the collaboration was born.”

The hook: “Queremos paz, queremos armonía / queremos paz, queremos libertad” translates to “We want peace, we want harmony / we want peace, we want liberty” which serves as the context for the uplifting and empowering lyrics sang by Trish and Cayeto.

Not only does Trish herself have Spanish heritage, but three members of HIRIE are Mexican-American, so a bilingual collaboration was kind of a given. Having met the members of the Costa Rica based Ojo de Buey when they performed at the California Roots festival in 2014, they approached Cayeto, the lead singer, to see if he’d be interested in working with them on a tune. Chris had written a hook in Spanish which Trish sang and demo’d to Cayeto, who was stoked to get in on the project. Recordings were completed by June, while the HIRIE band were actually in Cabo, in Baja California, working remotely with Ojo de Buey and Alameda Sound.

The “cover art ” Riddim was made by Mr John Vanilla, continuing the essence of comic book style and the official album release will be on November 20th.
