OneLegChuck’s “Respect” (Electrified Riddem) Background:
The journey to this song, “Respect,” somewhat starts back in the year 2000. OneLegChuck, a long with some friends and a stripper, headed to some downtown Sacramento Reggae show on K Streest at the Crest Theater. First greeted by the infamous Lou Dog, it turned out that it was a Long Beach Dub All-stars show where OneLegChuck was welcomed by the group, sat on stage, on-top of LBDA’s ice-chest, passing out beer.
During the show, Chuck tells me that “Someone handed me a mic, I think it was Tim Wu or Marshall Goodman, its a Lil hazy, but I got to freestyle at that show with Opie Ortiz. I was so inspired, I’m still busting out dub style-reggae music!”
Fast forward the clock 15 years and in 2015, OneLegChuck went out and saw Perro Bravo perform live at the Starry Plough in Berkley and introduced himself to the band with a cover of Sublime‘s “Badfish.” “I messed it up, did a short version, hung out and got to know Mudd Lowther. I got his email and sent Jeff Smith and Mudd and Miguel Happoldt my new music which they liked. I later went to a show in the bay area and I asked Miguel if he had any rhythms (riddems) laying around that I could write to…”
On October 5th 2016, OneLegChuck got to work on his first track, “Hot Box The Van” with Miguel Happoldt featuring Roger Rivas & Gil Sharone that was mixed in Chuck’s living room by Aaron Alzamora (AROCK). The world wide release for that single was November 17th, 2016.
After the love “Hot Box The Van” received, which included the most liked song three weeks in a row on 98.5 KRXQ’s Local Licks with Andy Hawk Sacramento, Miguel & OneLegChuck would reconnect for another collaboration.
“On January 9th 2017, Miguel sent me a Perro Bravo song, ‘Electric,’ from the album ‘Three On a Tree’ that I could remix. I sent the track to Zephyr Ahern to slap some cuts on it with the 1s and two’s. Miguel asked for some harmony on the hooks, so I asked my friend Kiah Asia Summers from One Sharp Minds (local Sacto band) to lay backing harmonies for the Perro Bravo remix I called, ‘Respect’ (Electrified Riddem).”
The song was officially released on Febuary 23rd 2017 and you can download it this week only on the homepage of ThePier.org or you can grab it on iTunes by clicking HERE!
