THA’s New Album: Gold Under The Glow + “Awake” Background:

Gold Under The Glow includes 11 brand new songs independently released on March 11th, 2016. Recorded in Nashville, the record was produced by Dabney Morris who is credited with incorporating synth-pop teeth into the band’s global foundation and summery sound. It’s a smart blending of world pop and club aesthetics that appeals to both audiences. In other words, The Hip Abduction is experimenting into new territory while innovating a reggae-rock genre that has evolved into repetition.

The record, from start to finish, shows the group exploring their sound while producing a modern take on something that feels eerily familiar and nostalgic, yet completely original and refreshing.

Track 10 on the new record is “Awake”, and after hearing what lead-vocalist/guitarist David New had to say about the songs origins, I came away with enjoying the track under the perspective of new ears. Here’s what David told The Pier with regards to Awake”:

“It is about my mother’s relationship with my autistic brother. I think mothers/fathers who take care of special needs kids are the strongest humans on the planet. She has and will continue to care for my brother till the day she dies and he will always be by her side. She has sacrificed her freedom and independence for him and to me this makes her the most amazing mother ever.”

Agreed and as I said, just knowing that the premise of the song was written with that in mind makes it that much more special of a listen. As for the track title, David explains that: “The term ‘Awake’ comes from a sense of discovery within ones self after raising and caring for another. This could be for any mother or father.”

As the lyrics of the song read: “Rise above when it breaks into, open up eyes put the world in view, Awake.”

The Hip Abduction Background:

The Hip Abduction includes David New (lead vocals, guitar), Pat Klemawesch (kamale ngoni, guitar, vocals), Chris Powers (bass), Dave Johnson (baritone and tenor sax), Paul Chlapowski (keyboards), Matt Poynter (drums, vocals), and John Holt III (kamale ngoni, guitar, vocals).

The Hip Abduction mixes reggae, rock, and African traditions to create their own unique sound. With heavy emphasis placed on African stringed instruments (kora, ngoni), dub-reggae-inspired bass lines, and funky afro-beat percussion, the band’s high-energy performances have won them a loyal statewide following. Formed on the gulf coast of Florida in 2009, The Hip Abduction has quickly grown from just a few African instrument playing surfers to a full-blown 7-piece reggae powerhouse.

The Hip Abduction has shared stages with the likes of Ziggy Marley, Umphrey’s McGee, Thievery Corporation, Dawes, Galactic, and .moe and has performed at Sunfest, Wanee Music Festival, Suwanee Hulaween, Orange Blossom Jamboree, Tropical Heatwave Music Festival and The BIG What?. The coming year promises national tour dates with exciting appearances at festivals including Shaky Knees, Slide Into Spring Fest and more. Fans should also be on the lookout for surf footage and travel photos from this Florida coastline collective.
