VP Records has been on the forefront of the ever growing genre of reggae music for a long time, presenting the best of what the culture has to offer. Their Reggae Gold Series compilations kicked off in 1992 and they’ve topped reggae billboard charts for the decades that have since followed.
These compilations contain diverse collections of music from some of the most popular sounds of very well known as well as up and coming talents. In 2012, VP released their 20th anniversary edition of Reggae Gold Series, which is the best selling compilation in the genre. In the past, they’ve hosted legendary musicians amongst the likes of Tarrus Riley, Freddie McCgregor, Wayne Wonder, Buju Banton, Beres Hammond, Beenie Man, Capleton and many more.
This year’s 12 track compilation was released July 30th and holds a fresh mix of heavy hitting styles and cultural personalities with hit songs on this album coming from artists like Major Lazer and Busy Signal, Jah Cure, Sean Paul and Konshens, Bunji Garlin, Fay-Ann Lyons, Assassin, QQ, Etana, Spice, Gyptain & Melanie Fiona, Maxi Priest and Roam Virgo.
The first track, “Watch Out For This (Bumaye)” by electronic dancehall king, Major Lazer featuring Busy Signal, The Felxican & SF Green is hot like fire and their video from 2013 has over 63,000,000 views on YouTube right now. This album also debut’s some rising artists work like QQ’s “Jack Hammer” and emerging female dancehall sensation, Spice’s “So Mi Like It” (which is at the top of Jamaica’s dancehall charts.)
Some other key features on this album include 2012’s song “One More Time” from smooth vocalist Gyptian featuring Melanie Fiona and Sean Paul’s “Want Dem All” off his newest album Full Frequency. Reggae Gold Series 2014 will begin hard copy sales in stores August 12th on VP Records.
