This past week, 311 made their 2014 debut with a two night run in Los Angeles at The Roxy. Excellent reports from the two nights have been coming in as the band gears up for Tuesday’s 3/11 Day with the release of Stereolithic, as well as the upcoming festival season.
Selling out instantly this past Valentines Day, playing two consecutive nights on Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th, an at-capacity crowd of just 500 311 fanatics saw the band finally take the stage for the first time this year.
A show that attracts the biggest 311 diehards from around the world, these more intimate club sets, billed by the band as ‘An Evening with 311’ were sets that allowed the band to warm up, fine-tune some older tracks and introduces a few new songs.
Sets intended for their longtime fans, 311 performed 23 songs each night, as usual with no repetition, playing 46 different tracks from all over their immense discography, including their many hits, but also several songs the bands hasn’t played in a few years. Night one heard songs such as the B-side, “Get Down,” and “Still Dreaming” last played on 311 Day of 2010 and of 2012 respectively, while fans who attended night two heard a few tracks not played live since 2011.
These shows also saw the setlist debut of several new tracks. With the pre-production on their soon-to-be-released record, Stereolithic, done before last summer’s Unity Tour, many 311 fans had high hopes of hearing a new tune or two, but to their dismay the band held out. Now, with Stereolithic here, 311 made the highly anticipated live reveal of four new tracks at the Roxy, the first four songs off Stereolithic.
Halfway through night one’s set, 311 aptly introduced the new tunes playing the first track of Stereolithic, “Ebb and Flow.” Then later that night opened their two song encore with the new album’s single and second track “Five of Everything.” During the next nights’ set 311 once again busted out a new track halfway through the set with Stereolithic’s third track “Showdown,” and five tracks later playing the albums fourth track “Revelation of the Year.” Check 311’s setlist page to read through the complete set lists from both nights.
3/11 Day 2014
As previously mentioned the ultimate 311 concert experience takes place this Tuesday, as 311 returns to New Orleans for a very special 311 Day performance at the New Orleans Arena. This day also coincides with the release of 311’s 11th studio album, Stereolithic. The album is available digitally, physically, in vinyl, and as a special limited 311 Day Edition that includes four bonus tracks. Only 3000 copies of that CD will be made available at 311 Day.
Giving their fans the month of April to take in Stereolitic, starting in May, 311 will embark on their next set of shows, playing a week around the east coast. The six show run includes three festival appearances, followed by three headlining shows. The run kicks off on Friday, May 2nd in Memphis at the Beale Street Music Festival, an event that also features acts along the lines of Kid Rock, Snoop Lion, The String Cheese Incident and many more. The next day, 311 will headline the DC101 Kerfuffle Festival, a day of music that also includes SOJA, Cage The Elephant and several more. 311 will close the weekend with a spot at the Carolina Rebellion Festival. A heavier festival that takes place in In Charlotte, North Carolina, the day 311 plays also includes Kid Rock, Five Finger Death Punch, and more.
This run is scheduled to close out with mid-week performances through Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. From here, 311 will fly back west, taking a short break before picking it back up during the end of may, playing two warm shows in Nevada, before their headlining spot in Monterey, California at the 5th annual California Roots Music Festival.
Typically 311 tours the nation on their annual summer Unity Tour through July and August. So far, the band only has two dates listed during the second week of July. 311 will headline the second night of the Common Ground Music Festival in Lansing, Michigan, on July 9th. Then Saturday the 12th, 311 will play what is sure to be a special hometown set in Omaha, Nebraska at the Grass Roots Music Festival for the 20th anniversary of the band’s second album, Grassroots.
