The fall tour headlined by The Dirty Heads and Gym Class Heroes was one of the most highly anticipated tours of the season. Both bands were fresh out of the studio, as Gym Class Heroes are set to release The Papercut Chronicles II on November 15th, while The Dirty Heads have been working at the Sonic Ranch in El Paso, TX with the renowned producer Mario C (Beastie Boys/Jack Johnson/Flobots).
Shortly after the Gym Class Heroes joined The Dirty Heads in Florida, following a stint in the United Kingdom, Travie McCoy (Gym Class Heroes Vocalist) had fallen to an undisclosed illness. The tour continued on until the Gym Class Heroes canceled their sets in Boston and Albany.
As of November 2nd, Gym Class Heroes officially canceled the remaining tour dates with The Dirty Heads and supporting act, Wallpaper. The band released a statement on their social networking feeds early Tuesday morning stating:
“Due to Travie’s illness, we regrettably have to cancel our remaining tour dates with The Dirty Heads. Our day-to-day schedule on tour has been grueling, and he really hasn’t had a chance to properly recover. He should be out of the hospital any day now, and we hope by staying in one place and resting, he’ll be back in action soon. To all of our fans who bought tickets, we’re so sorry. We had such a great time recording this album that we couldn’t wait to get out on the road to share the new songs live and in-person with our fans. That’s why this was such a hard decision to make. We promise as soon as Trav is back on his feet, we’ll get back out soon to see you.” -GCH
For all of The Dirty Heads’ fans holding their collective breath, there was a moment of uncertainty if the tour would continue on, or be canceled completely. However, in similar fashion, The Dirty Heads informed their loyal following that the tour would push forward uninterrupted.
“As you may or may not know, Gym Class has an illness in the band and has canceled the last few shows. While we hope Travie gets better soon (nothing worse than being sick on the road) there is a possibility they may jump off the rest of the tour, which is a bummer! But the last thing we wanna do is cancel the whole tour. So no matter what happens we wanna stay out and keep playin music and putting on the best shows we can for you guys. Whether it’s playing for 2 people, 20 people or 2,000 people we are staying out. We will continue on the road to finish out the tour as planned as the sole headliners. Wallpaper will continue on as well as direct support. Thank u guys for your continued love and support. We love you, peace!!!!—- And it’s the first time we are playin some new songs!! Hope you enjoy.” -DH
The positive side of this story affects The Dirty Heads’ set length. With the possibility of only hearing a one-hour set prior to this situation unfolding, the band will most likely extend their set a great deal as sole headliners. And for all of us reggae fans, we have no complaints! Gym Class Heroes will be sorely missed throughout the remaining dates. Yet, as the saying goes, “The show must go on!”
