Arizona’s alternative-reggae scene keeps growing, and Chris Bowen is making waves with his latest single, “Nine.” The first release from his upcoming five-song EP recorded at Kamp Studios, the song blends indie alternative textures with soulful influences and genre-crossing creativity, giving listeners a fresh taste of Bowen’s evolving sound.![]()
“Nine” features Mouse Powell, a versatile vocalist who fuses hip-hop, soul, and alternative elements. Powell, recently signed to Ineffable Records, adds energy from a growing roster of indie-reggae and alternative artists, making this collaboration a standout moment in the Arizona scene.
Built around a smooth groove and reflective lyrics, “Nine” focuses on personal growth and leaving behind what no longer serves us. Produced by Stravs and co-written by Ryan Weddle (Katastro) and Colten Avery, the single has extra depth and polish. Its lively rhythm and hopeful lyrics make it a song you’ll want to play whenever you need some positivity.
Colten Avery recalls the sessions: “Working with Chris was a massive privilege. He came in with a willingness to look for something new and grow as an artist, brought the energy and vulnerability that allowed for huge creative moments.”
Stravs adds: “When we were in the studio working on this record, it became clear that we had tapped into something special. Chris is on a mission to evolve and to use his music to lift others up. I respect that.”
“This song is about shedding the things that don’t serve us and our souls,” Bowen explains. “It’s about telling our old selves goodbye and embracing the new version of ourselves moving forward.”
Describing his vibe as “indie alternative meets Motown,” Bowen draws from a wide mix of influences: Incubus, Sublime, Bob Marley, Twenty One Pilots, Katastro, Teddy Swims, Bill Withers, and Otis Redding. Those influences shine through in the soulful melodies and alternative textures of “Nine.” Chris’s heartfelt vocals and Mouse’s own style make it feel personal while still full of energy.
Though Bowen only began writing and performing in 2021, he’s quickly built a full live band. His lineup includes Brett Coleman (guitar, keys), Jason Rogers (percussion), and Lorenzo Gonzalez (drums), who Bowen says has been a huge lift for both their live set and creative process. Brett also introduced Bowen to Danny Torgersen (Dan E.T., producer and multi-instrumentalist for Badfish), who has been a muse in his musical evolution, producing several songs over the past few years.
For Bowen, the connection to Mouse Powell came naturally. “I met Mouse through Danny a couple years back and have been wanting to collaborate for a while,” he says. “That made this one really special for me, especially being the first release.”
“Nine” gives listeners an early glimpse of Bowen’s debut EP. With production by Stravs, co-writing from Weddle and Avery, and a feature from Powell, it’s a song likely to resonate with anyone looking for an uplifting, genre-blending moment in their day.
