You Can Thank ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’ for Cydeways’ New Millencolin Cover

Santa Barbara reggae rockers Cydeways recently released their cover of Millencolin’s “No Cigar.”

In a video shared exclusively with The Pier, Cydeways detailed how they discovered the classic pop-punk tune.

“We chose this song basically because we all played ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’ growing up,” frontman Dustin Parks explained. “That soundtrack basically shaped our style of music.”

“I just always loved the energy of that song,” added guitarist Kevin Harvey. “And the chorus is a fucking banger!”

Originally released in 2000 on Millencolin’s fourth album, Pennybridge Pioneers, the track became an underground success. As Millencolin played on Warped Tour and the Punkorama Tour that year, “No Cigar” echoed on stages across America. Meanwhile, Tony Hawk’s hugely popular video game franchise brought it into people’s homes, introducing a broader mainstream audience to the song’s instantly-catchy sound.

For their cover, Cydeways put their own distinctive spin on the track, rerouting the tune’s energy without losing any of its punk rock foundation. “We were able to make it our own, but also kept all the stuff we loved about the original,” Harvey noted.

Cydeways’ version of “No Cigar” will be part of the upcoming compilation Operation Irie. The album – which also features contributions from Pepper, Little Stranger, Passafire and Long Beach Dub Allstars – comes out Oct. 10 and is available for pre-save now.
