“Asleep In The Machine” Background:
Quite honestly, up to this point, we don’t know much about Bootleg Rascals, who formed in 2013. But when their music came across our desk, we were quite pleasantly surprised at the original approach they’ve taken towards their songwriting. Being that they’re from Sydney, Australia, not much news on the group has been polarized just yet and we hope to change that by sharing their music with you.
As the press release reads, Asleep In The Machine is the burrito-slingin’ dub monsters first full-length album. The album hones in on their mutant dublactic hip-hop sounds and hooky song-crafting. Working with artist/producer, LyMo in the studio The Rascals have put together something tasty.
Their third latest single is the title track off the album, ‘Asleep In The Machine’, which is our leak of the week. Staying true to the Rascal flavour, the album features some taco-licking tones that shoot from the hip and bounce off into a galaxy of space gorillaz. It’s an album that will dip you into a Cancun boat party, then shake you into the Sunday morning recovery.
Carlos’ prego sauce-dipped vocals are the salsa in the taco layer. Sitting above Jimmy’s unique intergalactic guitar riffs, Sgrillex’s dubtastic basslines and synths and Jack’s trip-hop beats and kicks.
A band favourite on the record, “Asleep In The Machine”, sees singer Q-Dome in his element. The song maintains the unique Bootleg flavours with a sexy Rhodes piano and Jimmy’s intergalactic guitar hooks laid down over a trip-hop beat. The feel and grit of a Bootleg song with the extra Rascal sheen.

Bootleg Rascal Background:
Fresh out of East Coast Australia, Bootleg Rascal is a four-piece band that craftily intertwines reggae, psych rock, dub, and hip-hop. Since the band formed in 2013, they have quickly gained traction Down Under from Psychotica, their 2014 6-track EP, as well as a relentless touring schedule throughout their homeland. Despite their original lead singer Dan Crestani deciding to leave the band to pursue a solo career, Bootleg Rascal has been able to keep stride by adding Carlos Lara‘s smooth yet gritty voice to fill the vacancy left by Crestani. Currently the band consists of the aforementioned Carlos Lara (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Jimmy Young (Lead Guitar), Scottie Grills (Bass Guitar/Synth), and Jack Gray (Drums). Bootleg Rascal performs under the tight knit Sydney based record label Sureshaker Music, which also houses Sticky Fingers, Lyall Moloney, and Boo Seeka.
Last year, they toured with their brothers in arms, Sticky Fingers, in Europe. Playing to Sellout crowds in France, UK, Holland and Germany. Then wrapped up 2015 with a bang at Festival of the Sun (Port Macquarie), Lost Paradise (Peats Ridge) and The Falls Festival (Byron Bay).
Bootleg Rascal will be touring North America with Sticky Fingers starting the last week of April 2016. Fans in the US will have a chance to see the 4 piece group from Australia when they touch down here starting April 27th in Chicago, IL. View the dates below and stay tuned for more updates on this up and coming talent.
