MP3 Leak of the Week: No Kings

Based out of Ocean Beach, CA, I met No Kings by accident at Alesmith Brewing for Sublime’s Mexican Lager release party. I was given a CD by vocalist Matt Cook and then about a month later, Jeff Smith of Long Beach Records is suggesting them for a feature. So here we are with a free MP3 give-away…

No Kings “Lowlife’s & High Rollers” Background:

“Lowlife’s & High Rollers” is the titled track to No King’s last studio album that was released via Long Beach Records. The band has plans to release another record by early 2018. When discussing which song to feature at The Pier, vocalist Matt Cook suggested the titled track, telling The Pier:
“Our bass player Garrison wrote the original riff. It was originally played at half speed, and was loosely inspired by the Grateful Dead’s ‘Fire on the Mountain.’ At some point while we were noodling around and experimenting we decided to double-time it, and the song sort of came together on its own from there. Lyrically speaking it deals with a lot with the feeling of uncertainty we all deal with when we’re putting dreams and ambitions ahead of ‘playing it safe.’ There’s a great dichotomy in OB of gritty street kids, artist, surf rats and then super nice mansions right next door.”

No Kings Background:

No Kings is a surf-rock/ska/dub group based out of San Diego, CA. The band was originally formed by guitarist Joel Brust and bassist Garrison Cyr. After leaving their first band, Subliminal Trip, in 2011, Joel and Garrison continued writing music together. They soon enlisted friends drummer Rafa Scatolin and vocalist Matt Cook, and have been writing and recording music together ever since.

No Kings plays a sonic fusion derived from the rhythms of first and second-wave ska and reggae, the guitar sounds of psychedelic and surf-rock, interspersed with the frenetic energy of punk.
